

others to know Jesus. She started by playing the piano for a gospel quartet of high school friends in
Sharon, Tennessee and played for gospel groups for the next 35 years. Sylvia played the piano for
countless church services and related events.
She started a youth ministry at the Ingham County Juvenile Home every Monday night that continues to
this day. She had a ministry at the Ingham County Jail from 2005 until no longer able and delivered
Meals on Wheels for many years. Sylvia also enjoyed volunteering at the City Rescue Mission Women’s
Shelter for several years.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her first husband of 28 years (Dean Bailey) in 1980. She is mourned by
their children; Mary Porter, Larry (Diana) Bailey, and Scott (Rachelle) Bailey; their grandchildren; Luke
Porter, Dean, Michael and Chris Bailey; and their great-grandchildren; Braiden, Christian, Landon and
Tristan Porter and Gavin Cournaya.
Sylvia married Milan (Mike) Maat in 1984 and is mourned by him and his family of children; Bruce Maat,
Brian (Jennifer) Maat, Vicki (Steve) Fox and Janice (David) Platte; his grandchildren, Stacy (David)
Wykrent, Kelly and Matthew Fox, Trevor, Savannah and Jonathan Maat; and his great-grandchildren;
Luke and Alyssa Wykrent.
Visitation will take place on Friday, June 4, 2021 from 2-4 and 6-8 at Maranatha Baptist Church,
2300 North Waverly Road, Lansing, MI 48906. A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 11:00am at Maranatha Baptist Church with a visitation at 10:30am.
