Thomas McComb Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away on January 16, 2025 at the age of 95. Tom was born to Thomas and Ada McComb on June 25, 1929, and proudly served his country in the military, beginning his career in the Army Air Corps during World War II with deployment to Japan. After his honorable discharge, he continued his service by enlisting in the Army National Guard, where he served until his retirement as a Major in 1971. He reenlisted again in 1974 and finally retired in 1989 as a Sergeant 1st class.
Tom also worked for many years with Greyhound Bus lines alongside his wife Jeanette and grandson, Matthew. His outgoing nature and love for people made him a familiar and cherished presence to the bus drivers and regular patrons. Known for his joyful personality, Tom loved singing and was an enthusiastic participant in family activities. He enjoyed playing cards, games like Yahtzee and Scrabble, and putting together puzzles with his grandkids. He loved watching old military films, westerns and musicals. He had a passion for history and was very patriotic. Tom was also a huge fan of scratch off tickets and trips to the casino. He often joked that he was driving home but his car decided to go to the casino instead.
He met and married the love of his life Jeanette Riddle in 1950. His greatest joy in life came from spending time with his family. Whether it was playing games with his grandkids, going on road trips to get to family reunions every summer or sharing moments with his great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, Tom always treasured his loved ones.
He is survived by his grandchildren, Matthew McComb and Melissa McComb; his great-grandchildren, Kaelyn and Tommy Stanton; his daughter-in-law, Sandy Thelen; his sister-in-law, Marilyn Riddle; his brother-in-law, Dick Heil; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will forever hold him in their hearts. Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elsie Jeanette McComb; his sons, Robert McComb and Richard McComb; and his siblings, Virginia, Max and Marcy McComb.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 12pm at Evergreen Cemetery. Following the graveside, guests are invited to a reception at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home (900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing).
