Born December 19, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois to Herman Sr. and Mattie Austin. Tyrone was the sixth of seven children. As a young child he attended Mason Elementary. He later attended Farragut High School where he joined the marching band. His love for music flourished and he formed a band with his neighborhood friends. During his time at Malcom X Junior College he learned to play golf and took Karate lessons. Where his love of martial arts began.
In 1974, Tyrone relocated to Detroit, Michigan to pursue his career as an air traffic control specialist. During his time at Detroit City Airport he met his beautiful wife Karen. In 1987, the Federal Aviation Administration transferred Tyrone's role to Lansing Capital City Airport and he became a permanent resident of Lansing, Michigan. Tyrone had a diverse career obtaining his Real Estate Licensing to assist his wife with her Real Estate business. He served the federal government as an Air Traffic Control Specialist for 31 years retiring in 2005. After retiring from his role with the federal government he worked for Lockheed Martin until 2010.
Tyrone was a loving father, during the summer he enjoyed taking his daughters bowling, swimming and driving. A lifelong collector, Tyrone spent his time finding neighborhood gems as a child and exploring garage sales as an adult. He was a fantastic card player. Growing up family gatherings always included a game of Bid Whist. He also enjoyed playing Dominos and was an extremely competitive player. Tyrone was a man of many interest. His hobbies included tinkering around in his garage doing wood work and flying remote controlled helicopters. Following his retirement Tyrone enjoyed roller skating and ballroom dancing with his wife.
After a brave battle with cancer Tyrone passed away surrounded by family on Friday, June 30, 2017. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Karen Fisher-Austin; his children Brittany (Cody) Stieg and Chardé (Cortez) Ervin; his siblings Pearl (Willie) Gilson, Connie Austin, Mary Love, Gregory Sr. (Jennifer) Austin, Shenetha (Michael) Burson; his grandchildren Chilan Ervin and Vanessa Stieg; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, loved ones and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Herman Austin Jr. .
Tyrone enjoyed life, family members and many friends. He will be greatly missed.
Friends may visit Mr. Austin from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.
Family hour will be from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday prior the Homegoing services at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 8, 2017 in the Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing, Mi 48917. Interment will follow at Delta Center Cemetery.
