Dave & family -

I can't begin to express how much I will miss Carol. In distance we were miles apart; in hearts very close. 

God puts people in our life's path and I was very blessed that God put Carol in my path. I know Carol is free from pain and suffering and so we only feel sorry for ourselves now in our loss.
 
May God be with us all in our sorrow.

I am truly sorry for the loss of the love of your life--your beloved Carol. 

I know Carol's loss leaves a hole in your heart that will never be filled.

I pray you will be able to take things one day at a time.  Carol will always be with you in your memories of her.  Enjoy them. Cherish them.

Dear Carol,
I wish I could be at the memorial with your family and friends today, but I know you understand that I need to be with my Mom on Easter.

Sherry and I have been trying to figure out when we first met.  We know it was when we were all hired in at Lottery at the same time and we're pretty sure it was in the mid-80's.  It's hard to believe it's been 25 years...no wonder we look so young in those early pictures!  I could write books about all of the great times we've had and the memories we've made.  Remember the night we moved you into your new house in Portland?  I kept saying we should unpack "just one more box" and then we ate Portland Party Store pizza sitting on the kitchen floor.  What about the surprise baby shower we had for Terri when she was pregnant for Evan and they were living in Florida?  We videoed the shower, wrapped up all the gifts and shipped everything off to her.  Remember our trip to Daytona Beach?  We stopped to see Doris and Steve on the way down and spent the  night with Terri, Andy, and baby Evan before we went to the beach.

Do you remember going to my Monm's and canoeing down the AuSable River?  Most people float down the river with the current....but not us!  We spent half the trip going from one side of the bank to the other!  I don't think I've ever laughed so hard.  It was a miracle we didn't tip over!

I'm not sure if the canoe trip was before or after I convinced you that tent camping was fun.  While your idea of camping was the Holiday Inn with a pool, being the good sport you were,  you agreed to give camping a try...twice.  Both times we ended up sleeping in my car because of thunderstorms.  I couldn't talk you into a 3rd time!

I remember the five little words you always said - "I'll never get married again".  Then I started hearing about this guy that was at Thanksgiving dinner - who just happened to be your brother's father-in-law.  You were both going to be in Florida after Christmas so you made plans to get together.  The rest, as they say, is history.  One week end in March the two of you were going up north with Sharon and Gordie.  Seemed pretty innocent to me.  But, I'll never forget the Monday morning I was sitting at work when you called and said "I thought you'd like to know my new last name".  Imagine my surprise!  Of course I wondered how our friendship would change now that you were married.  But it didn't.  I didn't lose a friend, I gained one.  Dave understood how much our friendship meant to us and encouraged us to spend time together.  Heck, he even let us go to Vegas and Disney World without him!  And he always welcomed me into your home whether it was in Lansing, Onaway, the campground or Florida.

And speaking of the campground, after your experience with tent camping, I was shocked the day you called and said you were buying a camper and were planning to spend the summers in Michigan - CAMPING!  Several times I packed up my tent and came to the campground - only to end up sleeping in the camper because, yup, you guessed it, Thunderstorms! 

Remember when you guys stayed with me last summer and we made a bracelet with the gem stones from your cruises?  We super glued the two pieces together and laid the glue on a piece of paper on the counter.  That piece of paper is still super glued to my counter top!  Everytime I clean the counter, I think of you and smile!

I gave you an I Love Lucy shirt with Lucy and Ethel on it and it said "We'll always be friends - you know to much about me".  We laughed about it because it was so true.  We could talk for hours and share secrets and feelings that we knew would be kept between us.  I could always count on you to tell me the things I needed to hear.  You could make me see both sides of a situation and I knew you would never judge me.  Five or six weeks ago I sent you a card and mentioned something that was bothering me.  As sick as you were, the first thing you did was pick up the phone and call me and helped me put things in perspective.  You were always there when I needed you.

I will always admire your strength, your courage and your positive attitue.  And I will forever miss your beautiful smile and your laugh.  I will always be grateful for your friendship.  My hope is that everyone is blessed to have found that one special friend like I found in you.  You do know I will still be talking to you and sharing secrets, asking for your adivice, encouragement and help - and I know you'll find a way to let me know you hear me.  I will always miss you my friend and cherish the many menories we have made.

We have many great memories with Carol and my father.  She truly enriched our lives and was the "coolest" Grandmother to Kerri.  She will be missed!

My deepest sympathy goes out to Dave and all of Carol's loved ones. She truly was one of a kind and I miss her every day.  She was a co-worker and a dear friend and there will never be another quite like Carol.  She had a great sense of humor and wisdom that I have relied on many times through the years I've known her.  My prayers are with all of Carol's family.

May your hearts be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. Hugs to everyone... Love You!

Steve, sorry for your loss, wish I could be there with you. I know this is a difficult time for you, my heart goes out to you and your family.

As with all sons there is a lifetime of memories I have of my Mom. For my Mom words like strength, courage, tenaciousness, compassion and understanding come to mind. She was a rock for me. Someone who shapes me even today; on her deathbed stressing the need for patience and the importance of trying to help others. Our last conversations consisted of accepting some things are out of our control and her excitement in finding an opportunity to share God’s message with a Hospice nurse. Even at the end she considered the need to help others more important than herself. 

My Mom did many things in her life. She grew up on a farm in Michigan where they had little but it was always enough. Family was very important to her. The stories of her growing up with her sisters Pauline and Violet and brother Gordie will always be with me. As will the time I spent with Grandpa and Grandma Willett. A childhood shaped by the closeness of family and the need for hard work in order to succeed. 

Hard work was always important to Mom. Like many others it helped define her. I remember growing up and having to get up before dawn to work side by side with her to do farm chores. Hay and water the horses and cows, prepare bottles of milk to feed the calves, check on the crippled and disabled animals we took in. Then she would change her clothes, always making sure she looked her best, and go to work in finance for the public schools, city, county and eventually the state. People she worked with nicknamed her “Spike” because she was tough but fair and always expected the best of her staff. She led by example never expecting more than she was willing to give herself.

Work was not her whole life. In her heart she sought and found adventure. I saw her ride horses, motorcycle, snowmobile, ice skate, snow and water ski, navigate boats, drive alone across country, tour in small planes (and watch from within as I jumped out of one), cruise the world, learn new cultures, and hold unto old and find new love. She loved my father, Jim, and she loved her new husband, Dave, with all her heart. 

The things I remember… Always being there for me no matter what. Always finding me when I was lost. Always healing me when I was hurt. Always advising me on how to be a good man. Sending me care packages while in the Air Force (even though she did not want to see me in harm’s way). Expecting me to do the right thing even under the trying of circumstances. Understanding when I made mistakes and offering unconditional love. Never judging but always expecting the best.

My Mom was a great woman and I hope people remember that. She loved, worked and cared deeply. I’m told these words will last forever. I’m telling you my Mom, Carol, was great woman who led the way for others. She was never afraid. She worked a hard. She took chances. She loved deeply. To have such a life is blessed.

I love you Mom. Thank you for all you have given me…

These are the last Bible verses Mom wanted to share with family and friends. She taught me many important life lessons and there was so much more I wish she had time to share. I love and miss her dearly. 

John 14:1-3
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

“For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”

These are the last Bible verses Mom wanted family and friends to remember after she passed. She taught me many important lessons in life and I know she had much more to share. I love and miss her dearly.

So sorry for the loss of your Mother,  I know how it feels and you will always think of her and how she contributed to your life.

"True friends are like diamonds, precious but rare" is part of a poem on a plate Carol gave me over 25 years ago. She has been that diamond in my life.  She was truly a one-of-a-kind friend. I hope all of you have been blessed to have the kind of friendship Carol and I shared.  I will always miss you my friend!

To Dave, Terri, Steve, Pauline and the rest of Carol's family.  I share in your pain and sorrow and thank you for making me a part of your extended family.  Losing her leaves a void in our lives that only memories and time can heal.  Someday our wonderful memories of her will outweigh the sadness in our hearts.
