Born on June 29, 1928 in Newark New Jersey to Avis and John Kolb, Doug grew up in East Orange, New Jersey and he also spent a lot of time with his cousins, uncles, and extended family in upstate New York during his youth. After graduating from the Gunnery School in Washington, CT, he attended Colgate University, where he played both football and baseball, before transferring to Syracuse University where he received a degree in journalism. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Lucille (Ludy) Osmundsen to whom he was married for 60 years. He is survived by his three sons Jim and wife Margaret, Scott and wife Patty and Todd and wife LeAnne. He was also the loving grandfather of Hailey, Emma, Caroline, Grace and Jack.
Doug was a devoted father and husband, and always made sure that his family came first. He spent much of his time coaching multiple sports teams for all three of his sons, and carried this giving attitude during his working career as the President of the Chamber of Commerce in Watertown, MA. and later into his life by volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club after his retirement. He was also a caring and hardworking executive, and had a knack for remembering the names of everyone he met throughout the course of his personal and professional life. He was known to be able to resume previous conversations with people; regardless of how much time had passed since he last saw them. Doug spent his entire working career in a variety of management positions at Western Electric Company, a subsidiary of AT&T. Both while working and after his retirement, he deeply cherished the times that he spent with his friends and family on Dolly Island in Lake Winnipesaukee during the summer, and at his home in Homosassa Springs, Florida in the winter. He was an exceptional athlete and played tennis well into his 80’s, often times with people who were at least 10 to 15 years younger.
Due to Covid protocols in place, we are not currently planning a service to celebrate Dougs’ life; however, in lieu of flowers, consider a donation to your local Boys & Girls Club in in his memory.
