I will always consider myself lucky and blessed that Harry and remained dear friends for 34 years after our brief marriage.  He will be forever missed and forever in my heart.

I was so saddened to hear about Harry.  Harry was such a dear friend, more like family to me.    Since I first met Harry in 1998/1999 I have always called him Uncle Harry.   I worked with Harry at several GC’s, most recent was DeBartolo.   Harry loved life more than most people, just a happy man!  He was always full of laughs and I will never forget his laugh!  

He called me the week before he passed away and we were supposed to have lunch the following week.   We never got to have lunch one last time and that breaks my heart.   I will never forget sharing Jersey Mike’s BLT subs with him,  his love for cars, his phone calls, the years we worked together on multiple projects and his work ethic.  

To Harry’s family, I am so sorry for your loss.  Harry was such a great man and loved his family.  He talked about his trips to Ohio and Germany.

Dear Harry,
the first time I met you was in December 1999. Together with Viola, Diethardt, Dennis and Norman we were celebrating a very special event in Berlin - the turn of the millenium. You were so excited to run around our capital and especially to see Checkpoint Charlie which you almost missed. Next occasion we met was one year later at Viola's Birthday. Again it was winter time. We were in Bavaria, it was freezing cold and you were running around in summer clothes, even sweating. You seemed to be so keen on seeing the castles built by King Ludwig II. When we arrived on Herren-Chiemsee Island we could hardly match your speed running up the hill to the castle. And when we entered it you could almost act as a tour guide because you would already know about everything that was inside. A few years later we all went to Paris and had so much fun together then. I remember your feet hurting because of the long walks and while we were discussing whether or not to take the only taxi waiting on Sacre Coeur the taxi was gone. It was so much fun to see the "shock" in your eyes when you realized that you would have to walk all the way down the hill to go back to the hotel. We also met a few times in Florida when Norman and I went there for vacation. And I always had so much fun spending the time with you.
Harry, it is unbelievable for me that you are no longer there and that we will never again go to Hops Grill or Outback Steakhouse together. I will always miss you. And I will always keep those lovable and consoling words in my heart that you had for me when my mother died. Wherever you are now I hope you have a good time and that this place will offer the chance for us all to meet again.

Harry, man I don’t really know what to say because I could go on for hours.  I truly enjoyed our friendship and knowing we could talk about anything . You were someone that everyone wanted to be friends with because of the person you were. People that didn’t get the chance to meet you missed out on a lot. Until we meet again my friend, you will be missed everyday. 

I have worked as Harry’s assistant for over 3 years and enjoyed every bit of it.  We had a lot of laughs together and shared a lot of memories. Harry was a working man’s man. He told you what he wanted and you’d better do it. 
I loved Harry Rutan and will celebrate his life.

Harry started with GCI in July 2016 and was our Superintendent at Legacy Union Square I and II in Davenport, FL.  Harry was by far one of the best superintendents in the industry and it showed with the execution of his work at Union Square.  Harry came to GCI via a referral through a Subcontractor; he was working on large High Density Projects in the Northeast and wanted a better quality of life (and warmer weather).  I remember meeting him in Orlando for dinner for his interview and listening to him answer all of my interview questions with ease; I remember thinking how much we so needed this guy to join GCI and what a great fit he would be.   He joined GCI a few weeks later, took charge of the Union Square and never looked backed.  Not only was he a Super Star Superintendent, he was great to work with, and was just the Nicest Guy.  He will be GREATLY missed…       

Dear Viola, Eric and Tom,
My heart aches for all of you!  I am so sorry for the loss of Harry.  I will continue to pray for comfort and strength for you.  I still cannot believe that Harry is gone.  I still cry whenever I think about him.

Dear Uncle Harry,
the first 25 years of my life I have not been able to get know you though I had already heard a lot about you and your brothers in the US from my mother Viola and my great-grandmother Martha. But following the tragic death of your mother and my grandmother Marianne the contact was somehow established. And from that moment on we never lost it again. I will always remember your calmness (in contrast to my parents) and your refreshing nonchalance as to the many challenges in life, while you also made me laugh when such a big guy like you suddenly could show the joy or fear of small child. The way you pronounced “Was machst Du” still sounds in my ears. We enjoyed our times with you in Florida as well as your visits to Germany when we were showing you around the many castles, especially those built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Unfortunately you did not have the chance to come over more frequently, especially during the recent years. Harry, I will miss you and always remember you.

Einen Tag vor Deinem tragischen Unfall haben wir noch lange miteinander telefoniert. Gemeinsam sprachen wir noch darüber uns bald in Deutschland zu treffen  und Pläne gemacht für viele gemeinsam Unternehmungen.
Dein plötzlicher Tod hat mich sehr getroffen und ich kann es nicht begreifen. Denke ständig du rufst wieder bei mir an.

und wollte doch so gern noch bei uns sein.

When you left this earth for heaven, you took a part of my heart with you.  Until we are united again, my heart will never be whole.  I am blessed and grateful for the special relationship we shared for 37 years, and the special love we had for one another was truly a gift. Eric and Tom, I know without a doubt how much he loved both of you.  Barely a conversation would pass that I wouldn't get an update on you both, and it made me happy to hear Harry speak so fondly of you.  This world lost a really good man, and you lost a wonderful brother, and for that my heart is broken for both of you (and Viola).   I'm so terribly sorry for your loss. Harry is predeceased by his parents- Marianne Lenz (Serenity Gardens Memorial Park) and Harry Rutan, Sr. (Forest Lawn in Pennsylvania) and his nephew- Jason Rutan of Maine.
He is survived by his siblings- Viola Gerritzmann, Eric Rutan, and Thomas Rutan, his nephews- Norman and Dennis Gerritzmann, and niece- Amber Rutan.
