Harvey Maslowe, husband, father, musician, sportsman, and friend to many, passed away on December 25, 2015. He was a man who loved life and loved the people with whom he shared his many pursuits and passions.
Born on November 3, 1932 to Charles and Gertrude Maslowe, he enjoyed an active youth full of fun times with friends, sports, studies, and playing the violin. Later, he served in the US Army as a 'radio-man' in the Korean War. It was in the service that he entered his career in engineering and computers while stationed for training in San Antonio, Texas.
He started working for Univac (later Sperry Univac and Unisys) long before there were things called "personal computers". At that time there were only large mainframe computers. Harvey rose through the ranks of the company in a successful 34 year career.
Harvey, who grew up in the Bronx, NY, met Marilyn Teitel, who was from Brooklyn, NY, in the summer of 1959 in the Catskill mountains in an arranged blind date setup by a friend of Marilyn's and one of Harvey's brothers. The weekend went well and they fell in love. They were married on February 20th 1960.
Harvey and Marilyn are survived by their four sons and their respective wives/partners: Brian & Judy, Lou & Karen, Harris & Mike, and Dan & Sharon. They are also survived by their beloved grandchildren, Meagan and Kevin - who are Lou and Karen's children. The immediate family and extended family were so important to Harvey and Marilyn and were a source of great pleasure throughout their lives.
Harvey's was a life full of activities, hobbies, and pursuits. From morning to night. Every day! From racquetball and softball and other sports in earlier years, to golf, fishing, traveling, pool shooting, and many other activities, he remained in nearly constant motion. And of course there was his music; more on that later. He had an active life during his working days and the fun intensified when he retired in December of 1989 at the age of 57. He loved to have fun, be busy, and get things done.
Successively living in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania while they raised their family, Harvey and Marilyn moved to Clearwater Florida shortly before Harvey retired. There they lived the rest of their lives under the warm Florida sun in their beautiful home on Sand Key. And Harvey stayed busy. Every day.
Music was ever-present & prominent in Harvey's life. His mother played the piano as he was growing up and Harvey took up the violin as a boy. He picked up the guitar while in the army and, as they say, never looked back. Starting with folk music and then becoming a listener and player of bluegrass, he was almost never without his guitar. In his 40's, he picked up his violin again, but no longer playing the classical music of his youth, it became his fiddle as he played the folk and bluegrass he loved so much.
Harvey made music with so many people - in groups, in bands, solo, in jams, at festivals, and local pubs, and as was obvious to everyone, he loved every minute of it. As a guitar 'picker' and as a singer he was good. Very good! And always he played with a smile and often a laugh.
His love and knowledge of music extended to many genres and in different forms including his large collection of 1900 - 1950s popular music sheets to his collection of classical music on old vinyl 38's. Oh, how he loved the music, but equally he loved the countless people with whom he made music and shared the love of music.
His love of his activities and people continued right up until his last days. True to form, after he lost Marilyn in May of 2013, he kept living, laughing, playing, and loving. Harvey was greatly fortunate to meet Olga Fisher with whom he came to share a deep love in the last years of his life and together they shared so much in too short a time.
Harvey Maslowe was a man of many talents and dimensions. He was very generous in many ways and was caring, funny, enlightened, and wise. In short, he was truly an amazing man who was greatly loved by his family and the legion of people with whom he interacted over time. Harvey gave great joy to the world around him wherever he went and he found great joy in all the good things life has to offer.
