Crawford, John C. (Jack), 92, went home to be with our Lord on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022 in Largo, Florida. He was the son of Harvey and Wanda (Dobson) Crawford and was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on July 7, 1929.
Jack met the love of his life, Dot Schumacher, in 1942 during seventh grade at William Wilson Junior High School in Mount Vernon, New York. He graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy in 1948, then went to Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont as part of the US Army ROTC program. He graduated in 1952 with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
In 1954, Jack and Dot were married at the Village Lutheran Church in Bronxville, New York and began their life together at the US Army base in Ft. Hood, Texas. After leaving the army, they moved to Mount Vernon and Jack joined the Lummus Company as an electrical engineer. Their family continued to grow. Jack and Dot had three sons, Robert (Wilma) – Mahwah, New Jersey, Richard – Memphis, Tennessee, and Thomas (Nicole) – Pompano Beach, Florida, along with two grandsons William (Jennifer) Crawford and James (Meghan) Crawford, and four great-grandchildren James, Tyler, Scarlett, and Juliette.
As an engineer, Jack specialized in petro-chemical plant instrumentation and traveled the world on many assignments. At home, he enjoyed photography, hi-fi equipment, model trains, woodworking and do-it-yourself home improvements. Jack and Dot were active in their church and enjoyed having small dinner parties including many cookouts at their summer place in Long Island, New York.
In 1990, after Jack retired from the Lummus Company, they resided in Colorado Springs, Colorado for the next 18 years. They would spend winters at Randolph Farms in Florida, part of the summer in Long Island and the rest of the time in Colorado. In 2008, the “Snow Birds” came home to roost as they moved from Colorado to Largo and became Florida residents. Jack and Dot were avid travelers and traveled far and wide including trips to Australia, China, Korea, New Zealand, Europe, South America and all 50 U.S. states.
Jack loved fixing and building things to help family and friends and enjoyed teaching and consulting with his sons and grandsons on the “how to” aspects. He reveled in always having a “project” to work on, whether big or small. His projects ranged from building major home additions and garages to new bathrooms, rewiring the house, replacing windows and even renovating the Randolph Farms entrance sign. Jack and Dot lived for family and were especially blessed to be able to spend time with their great-grandchildren. Some of the most memorable family gatherings included bringing the whole Crawford family together to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in Alaska, their 60th wedding anniversary in Greece and Jack’s 90th birthday celebration in Largo. Even when not able to travel, Jack would keep closely connected with family by Face Time and phone.
