

Joseph Peter Skala ,66 of Largo, FL, died November 18, 2010. He was born in Binghamton, NY and moved to Pompano Beach, FL in 1965. He moved to Tampa to attend USF in 1967 where he met Linda, his wife of 41 years. He graduated from USF with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Engineering. He retired from Florida Power Corporation in 2000 after 30 years of service. He was an Adjunct Professor at USF and St. Petersburg Junior College since 1980. He began his second career at SPJC/SPC as a Math teacher and Manager of a National Science Foundation Grant. He was a long time member of St. Jerome Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer, and a fan of all the local sports teams. With his Florida power colleague, Warren DiNapoli, he established the DiNapoli-Skala Families Scholarship at SPJC, funded by the donations of their teaching salaries. For many years he loved playing Santa Claus for the Florida Power Club children’s Christmas Party. He is predeceased by his father, Peter Skala. He is survived by his loving family, wife, Linda, daughter, Terrie, Tokyo, Japan; son, Brian (Alicia), Orlando; daughter, Angela (Steve) Purinton, Nashville, TN; mother, Albina Skala, Clearwater; sisters, Arlene Skala, Charlotte, NC and Lori Skala, Florence, KY and grandson, Zack Joseph Skala. Memorial con tributions may be made to St. Petersburg College Foundation or DiNapoli-Skala Families Scholarship. Friends may call from 5-8 pm Sunday at the funeral home chapel. A funeral mass will be celebrated 1 pm Monday at St. Jerome Catholic Church, 10895 Hamlin Blvd., Largo. Burial will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
