Norman Howard Baehr was born to Suzanne and Howard Baehr on the 14th of November 1933.  

He grew up with a great love of aviation and mechanics, ice sailing on his boat, the Misfortune, or playing basketball and fancied the idea of running away with the carnival. He was voted best dressed in his school and always had a striking style. After finishing high school, instead of taking a basketball scholarship to University he was drafted into the Army in the “Hell on Wheels” division, alongside Elvis in Germany.  It was during his time in the Army that they discovered his mechanical talents with airplane engines. 

Norman married Caryl Schulz in 1955 and they had two daughters, Suzanne and Sherrie.  He was a loving and dedicated father, who was always there to support his children.  

His love of aviation and his persistent dedication, lead him to his first pilot’s position with a major commercial airline, Seaboard World Airlines and away he went all around the world and loved every minute of it.  His career took him onto Flying Tigers Airlines and then spending over 20 years with Federal Express. He always shared wonderful stories of his travels and the many friends he met along the way.  He was very proud to be both flying as well as a flight trainer well into his 70’s, earning him the name “Stormin Norman”.


We went out to eat in Paris on a layover and on the way back to the hotel we ran into a young couple with a car that would not start. They didn’t speak English and we didn’t speak French but somehow, without tools, Norm got it running. The young woman cried tears of joy. It was beautiful to see. That and his great laugh are how I remember Norm.
