Abel R. Garcia, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly following a tragic accident at his home on November 2, 2025. He was 84 years old and fought bravely at UMC Trauma Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Born in Eagle Pass, Texas, on February 3, 1941, Abel moved to California as a teenager with his sister Naomi. He built a distinguished 30-year career with the Southern California Rapid Transit District (now Metro), beginning on the railroad, then as a bus driver earning numerous awards, before later becoming an Instructor and Lead Accident Investigator. His remarkable record included driving over two million miles without a single incident.
In his early working years at Ranch Market in Los Angeles, he met the love of his life, Elvie, who became his wife on November 16, 1968. Together they created a beautiful life across California, Texas, and ultimately Las Vegas.
Abel proudly served six years in the United States Army, earning medals for exemplary conduct and service. A sharpshooter and weapons expert, he defended the Gulf of Panama prior to the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged. His patriotism continued throughout his life as an active and respected member — and Post Commander — of American Legion Post 790.
A devoted sports enthusiast, Abel loved the Los Angeles Dodgers, Green Bay Packers, golf, baseball, and football. He participated in bowling leagues, pool leagues, basketball, and tournaments that filled his home with trophies. He was the oldest member of his pool league at the Rum Runner in Las Vegas.
Abel lived with discipline, integrity, and deep love for his family. He instilled in his children the values of hard work, loyalty, respect, and doing everything with excellence. In later years, he softened beautifully, especially with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even the family cat, Gato, who adored sitting by his side.
Abel is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Elvie Garcia; his children Christine, Genevieve, Abel Joseph, and Matthew; 14 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and countless loved ones and friends.
