Our beloved husband, father, brother and friend, Dr. Amando V. Esguerra, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2024 at the age of 84. He was born in Antipolo, Philippines on February 6, 1940, the eldest of eight to Juan and Benita Esguerra. He graduated from Ateneo de Manila High School, was Pre-med at Letran College and graduated with his doctorate degree from the University of Santo Thomas. "Mandy" and his wife Ester first met in the Philippines at nursing school where he was her instructor, and they moved to Detroit, Michigan to start their life in the United States. He was the Director of Private Laboratories in Detroit and in 1978 moved to Roanoke, Virginia to become the VA Medical Center's Chief, Hematology and Blood Bank. In 1982, he was promoted to Chief Pathologist until retiring in 2011. He was also an Assistant Professor for the University of Virginia's Medical School from 1985 - 2011.
He was married to his Mahal (Love), Ester Esguerra, for 52 wonderful years, was an amazing father to Michelle Esguerra Abellar and husband Steve, AJ Esguerra and wife Courtney and Jason Esguerra and wife Jolie and was a loving 'Papa' to grandkids Chase, Chelsea, Lawson, Yori, Emmalyn, Andrew and Evie Wynn. Mandy loved to host parties for friends, dance, eat and cook delicious food, make people laugh, support his children and grandchildren at games/events, play tennis and play golf with his golfing buddies. He also was an active member of the Roanoke Filipino and Rhodes Ranch communities and was a founding father of the Southwest Virginia Association of Philippine Physicians. Mandy and Ester were also blessed to retire and travel the world with dear friends and family.
Private services are being planned. The family will also take him home to rest at the Basilica of St. Andrew in Roanoke, Virginia this Spring 2025 and will have a prayer service (details tbd and shared later).
