Annie Rose Proctor was born in Jackson, Mississippi to Charles and Fannie Proctor. As an infant, her family moved to Chicago, Illinois where she lived until her early teenage years when her family moved to Covert, Michigan. She was a cheerleader and graduated from Covert High School then attended Western Michigan University.
Annie’s life was dedicated to doing whatever she could to make things better for whomever she touched. During her late teenage years, as a youth of color, she participated in segregated lunch counter sit-ins in Chicago, protesting bigotry and racism. It was shortly after that, in 1961, when Annie met Leonard (Len) Hutchinson. On their second date they realized they were meant for each other and talked of marriage. They have been joined in marriage for 61 years. Between Len’s time serving in the US Army and a long career with IBM, Len and Annie have lived in nine states. Their four sons were each born in separate states.
While living in Lubbock, Texas, Annie and her oldest son Bubba volunteered to work at a crisis line, primarily directing women and their children who had been abused by husbands or boyfriends to safe resources. Annie and Bubba were comforted when their efforts helped people in need.
While living in Rochester, Minnesota, Annie wrote materials for the Rochester public schools on the uniqueness of teaching mentally challenged students. Annie and Bubba also volunteered to deliver food from the local food bank to needy shut-in elderly residents. Each summer Len and Annie would host their nieces and nephews to visit for a week or two. It was like a quasi-summer camp for their kids and their cousins. Annie lived a life of love and sharing. Her life’s objective was always to give more today than she gave yesterday.
Annie was preceded in death by her father, Charles Proctor; her mother, Fannie Proctor; and her brother, Willie Proctor. She is survived by her husband, Leonard (Len). Annie and Len have four loving and dedicated sons, Aaron (A.J.), David (Kip) and his wife Julie, Mel, and Leonard (Bubba). Annie is also survived by her loving brother, Charles, who has known and stood by Annie longer than anyone, anywhere. Annie left two granddaughters, Sarah and Hailey, and one great-grandson, Lennox. Her cousin Doris Jean, who is like a sister, has Annie in her daily prayers.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law from Florida, Antia. Also from Florida is sister-in-law, Darlene. In addition to being her sister-in-law, Darlene is Annie’s most devoted friend. Several relatives and friends will miss their beloved Annie.
Annie was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2016 and has received outstanding treatment from Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health – Las Vegas. Her many friends at Lou Ruvo provided immeasurable clinical and moral support to Annie for over six years.
Annie passed away on September 7, 2023 in a group home where she received compassionate, outstanding care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Annie’s memory to:
