Ms. Arlene was one of my favorite teachers growing up. She challenged us all to our fullest potential and loved to reward us with a Dum-Dums lollipop! She saw how special we all were individually and the impact we could have on the world. I know she impacted so many people and students, and the world is a better place because of her.

Ms. Dreitzer was my elementary school teacher in Brooklyn, New York. She was a wonderful educator and I’m so glad I had the opportunity as an adult to tell her how much I appreciated her.

The most beautiful lady and woman I have met, a heart of gold and and a wonderful neighbor that I would do anything for, I loved you Arlene and will miss you forever and our conversations. May you rest in peace forever with your wonderful husband Marty who I loved as well.

I have one more memory of Arlene to share. I didn’t have room on only one post.

Arlene shared with me how she became a teacher. She had the desire to teach as long as she could remember. Marty wanted her to be a stay at home mom but she had a desire to teach so she took a teaching job behind his back. One day Marty caught her walking home from the school and she had to confess. Marty said if it meant that much to her she could teach with his blessing. And so it began.

I was a huge fan of the Arlene and Mickey show. I enjoyed several acts over the years.  The acts were always ongoing during my visits. Often the Marty and Arlene show was playing too, like  when the two of them sang a song together from the swimming pool. I come from a cotton farm in South Tennessee and I had never seen grown up adults laugh so much. I was in awe and knew I wanted to be as much a part of this family as I could considering I had none of their DNA.  Additionally, Arlene’s two sons use ADVERBS!! I had never met men that used adverbs. I was awestruck with this family.

I followed the lives of all the Drietzer’s  thru Michele, my dear friend of almost 40 years. My last time seeing Arlene was on a trip with Michele, Arlene and Sheila. We went to Branson. Arlene and I rode in the back seat while Sheila and Michele rode in the front. I’m sure they never knew the fascinating topics Arlene and I were discussing. It turns out she and I have the same obsession with correct grammar and punctuation. I too would correct the written word when I found an error. Many times I have contacted websites to tell them of their mistakes. We discussed which misuse of certain words annoyed us most. The rest of the time we played with word etymology. We had such fun! I had found my people! The drive took about 3 hours and we had just about run out of words when we got there. I don’t think many people would want to spend their vacation this way but we had fun.

I loved Arlene and could feel her value as a person. When a Baptist red neck from a cotton farm in Southern Tennessee can connect so deeply with a white Jewish teacher from New York, it is something special. Arlene was something special to so many different people in so many different ways and we are all the better for having known her
