Attea Curtis Freeney, son of Hilliard and Antnie Freeney, was born on November 22, 1926 in Seawright, Alabama. After leaving Alabama, he moved to New York City, where in 1950, he met and married Rubina McKesey. They lived in both the Bronx and Queens. He passed his exams with flying colors and went on to become a Letter Carrier for the United States Post Office, where he worked for more than 30 years. Together they raised two boys; then Attea and Ruby wanted to add to their family, so they shared their lives with foster children. He attended Grace Methodist Church in St. Albans, New York, where he was not only a parishioner, but served as an usher, was active in the church school serving as its Superintendent for two years, secretary of the Men’s Fellowship, and a tenor in the Male Chorus. Attea and Rubina loved to travel, and they shared that love with their children—from visiting the Caribbean by land or sea, to crossing the country and seeing the highlights of Europe and Mexico. In 1994, they moved to Henderson, Nevada, where Attea and Rubina continued their services to God at the Green Valley Methodist Church, where they ushered for more than 15 years. Attea was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Rubina; as well as brothers Chalmer and Orea; and many other cherished relatives. Attea is survived by his two sons, Hugh and Curtis Freeney; daughters, Dionne McClain Freeney and Esther Wilkins; his most endeared brother, Jacob Freeney; sister-in-law, Marilyn; daughter-in-laws, Movelet (Joy) Freeney, Angela Freeney, and Lisa McClain Freeney; grandsons, Hugh L. Freeney, Dwight Freeney, Clarence Adams, Jr.; granddaughter, Domynique Jackson; nephew, Michael; niece, Deborah; and one grand niece. Attea is forever in our hearts and will be greatly missed, even as his family surrenders him to His Savior. Our family thanks you all for the support each of you have made through telephone calls, emails, letters, cards, flowers, food and all the many other ways that you have expressed your love. We deeply appreciate it more than words can express.
