

Dr. Bernardo Gueco Pineda, 84, of Henderson, Nevada passed away from natural causes on June 9, 2014 at St. Rose Dominican Hospital, the Siena Campus in Henderson, Nevada. He was born on August 19, 1929 in the Philippines and was the youngest of the 11 children of Maximina Gueco Pineda. He found the love of his life, Eliza Concepcion Laoang (Pineda) and at the age of 26 he married her. Dr. Pineda graduated from medical school in 1955 from the University of Santo Thomas in Manila, Philippines. He started his medical career with an internship at St. Claire’s Hospital in Schenectady, New York. He then completed his residency at Traverse City State Hospital in Traverse City, Michigan. After that, he and his wife moved back to the Philippines and worked as the Director of Mental Health Center and as a General Practitioner in Quezon City, Philippines. He moved back to the United States and was the Clinical Medical Director at the Mental Health Institute in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He then worked as a Psychiatrist in Private Practice and at the Burlington Hospital in Burlington Iowa, where he was also the Medical Director for one year. He worked in Burlington until his retirement when he moved to Henderson. He was the Valedictorian of his high school class of over a thousand people, President of his high school class at FEU High in the Philippines, President of his Liberal Arts college from 1948-1949 and 1949-1950, President of his College of Medicine for four years, President of the Burlington, Iowa Medical Society, President of the Philippine Psychiatrist Association of the United States of America, Director of the Burlington, Iowa Mental Health Center and President of the Burlington, Iowa Rotary Club. Dr. Pineda first and foremost loved his wife and family. He also loved golf, gardening, reading and dancing. He had an immediate positive effect on everyone he met. He was as compassionate and generous as any man could be and was truly loved by everyone, especially his wife and family. He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Eliza Laoang Pineda; his devoted children, Grace Lynn Pineda Toomey of Lakewood, Colorado, Michelle Laoang Krueger of Dunlap, Illinois, and Duane Laoang Pineda of Johnston, Iowa; and his grandchildren who kept him forever young, Adam Joseph Jeffress of Littleton, Colorado, Lauren Michelle Krueger of Dunlap, Illinois, Jacob Leon Pineda of Johnston, Iowa, Nathan Joseph Krueger of Dunlap, Illinois, Samuel Lucas Pineda of Johnston, Iowa, Ryan Edward Toomey of Lakewood, Colorado and Matthew Logan Pineda of Johnston, Iowa.
