With deep love and profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Bienvenido Ariate, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and man of unwavering faith, who was called home to the Lord on March 25, 2025, at the age of 87.
Born in Carigara, Leyte, Philippines, Bienvenido was one of ten children born to Alejandro and Tarcela Ariate. Raised in humble beginnings, he spent his early years helping to support his family, even forgoing school at times to work alongside his father, a fisherman. Despite these hardships and having lived through the Japanese occupation during World War II, Bienvenido's love of learning never faded. His perseverance led him to become valedictorian of his high school — a testament to the strength and determination that defined his life.
In 1963, Bienvenido joined the United States Navy, beginning a proud and honorable career of more than two decades. He served with distinction on numerous ships and bases around the world — including the USS Orion, USS Norton Sound, USS Somers, USS Paul, USS Puget Sound, USS Detroit, and USS Yosemite, as well as in San Diego, Norfolk, and Mayport. He retired as a First Class Petty Officer in 1984, a rank he carried with great pride and humility.
Bienvenido was first married to Catherine Holzer, with whom he had two daughters, Tarcy and Nonie. In 1972, while on duty in Greece, he met the love of his life, Norma Matoza. They married in 1974 and built a beautiful life together, raising two children, Cyrnni and Christie. Norma remained by his side for over 50 years, faithfully and lovingly caring for him until his final breath.
After his military retirement, Bienvenido continued serving his country as a civilian employee for the U.S. Navy in Alameda and San Diego before settling in Henderson, Nevada.
A devout Catholic, Bienvenido attended Mass regularly and lived his life guided by his faith. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures — especially fishing and singing. An early riser on weekends, he would take his family out on his fishing boat, creating memories filled with laughter and love. He was a gifted singer and could often be found with a microphone in hand, lighting up the room with his karaoke performances. His warm smile and open heart made him a friend to all; he never met a stranger he wouldn't talk to.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Norma; his daughters Tarcy (children Kathryn and Robyn), Nonie, and Christie (children David, Dane, Drew, and Chloe); his son Cyrnni (children Olivia and Lana); and countless extended family and friends who were touched by his kindness and generous spirit.
Bienvenido leaves behind a legacy of service, strength, joy, and unconditional love. Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing he is at peace in the arms of our Heavenly Father, and we rejoice in the memories he gifted us — memories that will live on in every story shared, every song sung, and every moment we gather as a family.
Visitation for Bienvenido will be held on Thursday, April 24th from 9:00am-11:00am at St Thomas More Community Catholic Church 130 N Pecos Rd, Henderson, NV 89074 with a funeral mass to follow at 11:00am. A Celebration of Bienvenido's life will be held Friday, April 25th, please ask the family for more details.
