Charlene was born in Key West, Florida to J.E. Norman and George Hamilton. She also lived in Norfolk Virginia, and briefly in Las Vegas in the 50’s, but spent most of her youth in Nebraska. Charlene attended Lincoln High School and later attended some classes at the University of Nebraska.
Her marriage to Rodney Spoor (also a Lincoln High Alum) took her to Montana in the late ’60s, where they started their family. Eventually, Rod’s work (and Char’s great desire to get out of the cold and the snow) took them to Las Vegas, NV in 1971.
Char was very active in her children’s lives and activities. She also ran a small card shop at Tropicana and Pecos, Plaza Card and Gift, in the '70s and would also help Rod at the UNLV Bookstore. She was a “team mom” for various Pop Warner and Little League teams, as well as a dance, gymnastics, and softball mom – always driving someone to a practice or a competition and cheering them on!
When the card shop closed, Char was a stay-at-home mom for a time but went back to work in the late '80s in the insurance industry. When she retired from that career, she took a customer service position at Edible Arrangements and had a blast! She made many wonderful friends and memories during this time!
Char and Rod divorced in the early 90’s but established a friendship. Char was the kind of person who never knew a stranger and practiced kindness as a lifestyle. She always made you feel welcome and kept you well-fed. During the 80’s there was always someone at the house, living there, hanging out or just stopping in for a meal. It was a wonderful open house that was a safe place for many because of Char’s caring nature.
Some fun facts about Char; she was at Disneyland (CA) on opening day in 1955. She got to see Elvis in concert, twice. She had a horse when she was younger and for a brief time an alligator. She once threw a very large diamond ring into a cornfield.
Char was never at a loss for conversation and she was an amazing storyteller. She was a “mom” and a “grandma” to so many.
Despite health issues, Char never lost her trademark sense of humor and positive attitude. She made friends with all of the nurses, doctors, and staff at the hospital. Many of them would come by just to say hello even if she wasn’t on their shift that day.
Char was a big fan of a wide variety of things from PBS to Game of Thrones, she was a voracious reader and she loved to do jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, and paint. She always loved to have people over for lunch or dinner or just to sit and visit on the patio. She enjoyed time in her backyard watching the birds. Char never missed a holiday, she decorated and sent a greeting card without fail.
Char is survived by so many wonderful people that were so special in her life including Holly Spoor (daughter), Kim (niece) and Tom Harper, Chris Harper, The Lopez family (Lynda, Cesar, David, Gabe, and Lily), Janet Mewshaw, Mark Sharp, Joyce Ryan (Sister), Jeff Softley (nephew), Allison Shoopman, Dan and Stacha Hamilton, Darlene Carlson, Vera Christy, Carole Null, Dan and Karen Chandler, Jean and Daryll Faust, Barbara Newman and family, Judy Combs, Kevin Harper, Steve Dahl, Felipe Valois, Todd and Joyce Wheeler, Cameron and Krissie Sorenson, Gigi Meyers (sister), Annelle McColley (sister), Carmen, Chi, Charlie, Brian, Oliver, Izzy, Sesai, Jori, Drew and the newest member to the circle, her great-grandson, Jaxson! (She was very well-loved, this list is by no means complete and could go on for days.)
Char passed on her own terms, her mind and heart were as strong as ever but her body had failed her, and she was tired. She was very clear, resolute, and at peace. She always said she wanted to go in her chair, at home, while eating a piece of Maire Callender’s pie and while that didn’t happen – her final days/hours were filled with tasty snacks, absolute love, laughter, friendship, and music (Including a special serenade from her “sweet boy” Mark singing Lady by Kenny Rogers, a rousing rendition of Copacabana, as well as her high school trademark song Boney Maroney).
We plan to honor Char always, but with a few special days in the mix; we will gather for a holiday decorating and to hold the traditional Christmas Eve party complete with Runzas! A celebration of Char’s beautiful life will take place in the spring when the roses are in bloom.
If you would like to honor Char, consider any of the following:
A donation to Vegas PBS, a nature-related, women's rights or animal rescue organization
Making a commitment to kindness and positivity
Sending greeting cards for holidays, special occasions, or no reason at all

"Family isn’t always blood, it’s the people in your life who want you in theirs: the ones who accept you for who you are, the ones who would do anything to see you smile and who love you no matter what.” Maya Angelou.
