David Dwight Main, age 61, passed away peacefully into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Saturday, March 31, 2018. He was enjoying time at the beach while on vacation in Sydney, Australia when his life here on earth ended unexpectedly.
He was born on June 29, 1956 in Evanston, Illinois to David Main and Virginia (Wahlund) Main. His childhood was full of imagination, inventions, and business endeavors, including those as a photographer and a magician. He also had an innate passion for aviation and received his pilot’s license at the age of 18.
Given his love of flying, he initially enrolled in the aviation program at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He supported himself through college as a certified flight instructor and went on to earn a degree in accounting in 1979, followed by a CPA. He married Darcy Roback, who he had dated since high school, on June 17, 1979. They were married for 20 years and had three children. He was the Comptroller at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA from 1990 to 1996. For the subsequent 20 years he was a Managing Director at Commonfund, an asset management firm, where he worked to help non-profit foundations grow their assets.
In 2011, he met his best friend and partner, June Sigman. They shared many adventures over the years, including a bike trip in Italy, wine tasting in Australia, numerous trips to air shows and Oshkosh (EAA), and lots of time with friends, family, and David’s six grandkids.
With his spontaneity and adventurous spirit, there was rarely a dull moment for those around him. He had a witty, tongue-in-cheek humor and a playfulness that was infectious (the “wavy Davey” dance was a family favorite). At the same time he was an accomplished businessman and professional pilot. He was a man of integrity, with a strong work ethic and always had a positive attitude.
David fulfilled a life-long dream at the age of 61, earning his Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate and EMB145 Type rating on March 21st, just 10 days before his passing. He was a First Officer on the EMB 145 Regional Jet and was scheduled to start flying Monday, April 2nd, 2018 out of O’Hare International.
He is survived by his beloved partner, June; three children, Jennifer (Jason), Brandon (Lacey), and Brittany (Jason); six grandchildren, Aiden, Chloe, Bailey, Torin, Teigan, Maverick; mother, Virginia; brother, Jeff (Corrina); sister, Lisa (Joe); and his previous wife, Darcy.
David shared his joy and passion for life with everyone around him. He was an inspiration to his family and will be remembered as a kind-hearted and wonderful friend, father, and grandfather.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 14th, 2018 at Palm Eastern Mortuary, 7600 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV. An open viewing will begin at 11 am, followed by a memorial service at 1 pm. A brief reception will be held in the foyer, and at 2:30 pm his friends will perform a “Missing Man” formation Cirrus flight.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the David Main Memorial Fund, which will help to serve Angel Flight and provide scholarships for aspiring young pilots.
