Dear Lisa and family,

I heard of David's passing recently and want to let you know how sorry I am for you and your family.  My life has been enriched by knowing you and David and please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Remembering Dehui Tao

Dehui and Yulan and two close friends, Suping and Wenjian came to visit us in Boston, in October, 2018.   They were all good friends of Ellen, in Louisville.  Dehui and Yulan were planning to move west, to Las Vegas.  As part of this trip, they wanted to take an outing, to experience the autumn foliage.

So the 6 of us set off  for a half-mile  hike to the  top of Mt Kearsarge.  We had a pleasant journey, remembering old times, getting re-acquainted, telling stories, laughing, and catching up on times-past and times-future.  

We stopped to re-fuel and eat brunch at a restaurant in Warner, New Hampshire - then drove  up through Rollins State park, taking in the beautiful foliage as we navigated the narrow road to the parking area and trailhead.   We paused at a picnic table, to have a quick lunch and refreshments, before setting out for the summit.  We were in no hurry, as we looked in wonder at the scenery.  We stopped at several points along the way to make pictures.  Then, we all carefully navigated up the final 50 ft of smooth granite to the top.   

There in front of us, in the clouds and fog, was a 4 ft high cairn, made of carefully placed rough boulders.  This marked the peak.  It was a moment of congratulatory high-fives.  We memorialized the event with photos of the 6 intrepid hikers around the cairn.

The trip down to the cars was easy and quick, with gravity as out friend.  Then we all took advantage of the scenic overlooks along the road down, to get pictures of  the colorful scenes and of each other. The inventor of cell phones never imagined the joy and wonderment.

The journey back to our home, in Boston was just as lively and animated, as we congratulated each other for the successful trek; and talked about our future.

Parting is never easy.  We are forever grateful for this moment in time, with our good friends.  Smiles and images that are now part of us forever more.
