It is with great sadness that our family announces the death of Donna Lee Stone (Hummer). Donna had been a resident of Las Vegas since 1986. She is preceded in death by her parents, Eugene F. Hummer and Dellamae Hummer (Schulken), her half-brother, Robert Chisholm, and her niece, Barbara Ann Rollins. She is survived by her son, Michael Stone, her sister, Marylou Rollins (Hummer), her nieces, Janice Rollins and Barbara Chisholm, and members of the Chisholm-Zykova family.
Donna was born in Pittsfield, MA in 1946 to Eugene (Gene) and Dellamae (Dell) Hummer. Throughout her youth, she and her sister Marylou were “Air Force Brats” due to their father’s career in the United States Air Force (USAF). During the course of their upbringing, they lived in and went to school in Pittsfield, MA, Long Island, NY, Lanesborough, MA, Japan, (back to) Lanesborough, MA, Fort Walton Beach, FL, Essex Junction, VT, Urbana, IL, Albuquerque, NM, Rantoul, IL, and North Las Vegas, NV where her father retired from Nellis Air Force Base.
After graduating from Rancho High School in North Las Vegas in 1964, Donna attended Dixie Junior College and Weber State College, both in Utah. She enlisted in the USAF in 1968 where she served as a supply inventory specialist and met her husband, Leonard Stone. She was granted an honorable discharge from the USAF, and she and Leonard moved to Natick, MA where they welcomed their son, Michael (Mike).
Donna was a music-lover and self-described ‘hippie’; music, friendships, and an independent spirit were woven throughout her entire life. She recalled concerts and times with friends with pure joy and loved listening to music from the 1960s, 70’s, and 80’s, including The Beatles (John was her favorite!), The Rolling Stones, Chicago, and The Beach Boys, just to name a few. She was fun-loving and social with a terrific sense of humor, and had an enthusiasm for puzzles and word games, especially Scrabble, throughout her life and into her last weeks. She loved creative endeavors such as crafting and ceramics, and in recent years, she found a rewarding role in the decorative and social outlets of her residential living facility. Engaging in online games and activities with her sister and countless individuals across the world became a passion and a focus during the last decade of her life, as well.
During difficult times, whether medical or financial, she always found her way and attempted to do the right thing. Anyone who knows our family may remember the frugal days of couponing with her sister and a community of like-minded friends! She was a generous, sensitive, empathetic person who was always willing to help others. She had a very special place in her heart for the many beloved cats that she owned over the years, including Oreo, Fluffy, Bo-Dash, Bubba-Doo, Izzy, Buffy, Trixie, and most recently her heart belonged to Jasper-Max (“Jasper”).
Donna was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), an organization that helped her navigate the service-connected disabilities that impacted her to varying degrees across her lifetime. To honor the life and memory of Donna L. Stone, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans organization (dav.org).
She will be missed every day.
