Hae Un Lee emigrated to Las Vegas from South Korea in 1980, where he was a former bureaucrat in Seoul’s Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. He got the inspiration to open a liquor store while buying a bottle of scotch whiskey. When he bought the bottle, he noticed the cashier said nothing – simply took his money and gave him change. This observation changed his life. Hae Un Lee, who was unable to speak English at the time, decided to open a liquor store.
Mr. Lee opened his first store in 1981, over 37 years ago, and was one of the few independent liquor retailers at the time. Today, he speaks English and has grown his retail chain to 22 stores in the Las Vegas Valley, Mesquite, Reno and Wendover, Nevada and employs over 300 people with total gross revenue approaching nearly $150 Million. His business philosophy is to offer low prices, a wide selection of products, and convenient locations to his customers.
Mr. Lee was active in the Asian community through his work with the League of Korean Americans, Asian Chamber of Commerce, and the Las Vegas Korean Association. His awards and honors include: Asian Chamber of Commerce, Lifetime Achievement Award, 2014; admittance to the prestigious “Wine and Spirits Guild of America”; Retailer of the year 1996; 5 Star Award Retailer of the Year by Nightclub & Bar 2009; Recognized by KBS Broadcasting in a Global Success Story 2014 to name a few.
Lee’s Discount Liquor and their charitable foundation, Lee’s Helping Hand, have a long-standing tradition of strengthening families and communities through its innovative events and partnerships. Since 2002, they have contributed more than $1 Million to support local children’s charities, education, families and communities.
