

Born in Mobile, Alabama, on January 29, 1934, John’s life was marked by unwavering dedication to his family and country. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1956, serving overseas during the Korean War, and continued his service in the Navy Reserves until 1960. His military experience instilled in him a strong sense of duty.
Following his military service, John embarked on a successful career in the natural gas industry. Beginning as a meter reader with Southern California Gas, his talent and drive propelled him to executive positions at Southwest Gas Corporation. His career journey with Southwest Gas took him from office manager in Las Vegas to division manager in Victorville, California, and eventually back to Las Vegas where he served as Executive Vice President before retiring in 1993.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was a man of diverse interests and boundless generosity. He cherished his family deeply, leaving behind a legacy of love and support. He is survived by his loving partner of 38 years, Catharine Leonard; his brother, Gordon Mayo of Laguna Niguel, California; his son, David Mayo (Pam) of Tucson, Arizona; his daughter, Sharon Rodriguez (Mark Robbins) of Henderson, Nevada; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. His passion for cars, particularly keeping current with the latest models and skillfully negotiating purchases for his loved ones, was matched only by his love of reading, his avid interest in sports, and his willingness to offer guidance and support to those around him.
John’s life was a testament to hard work, unwavering loyalty, and a love for family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A private burial will be held where he will be laid to rest at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada.
