Ken Charles Muntz, Sr. was a modest and trustworthy man who held traditional values throughout his life. He was tough-minded and earned the respect of all who knew him. Ken was a realist and was always ready to take on any responsibility life sent his way.
Ken was born on April 19, 1954 in New York, New York to Ben and Ruth Muntz. He was raised on a rural two acres in Staten Island with his five siblings, Jeanne, John, Dick, Ed, and Jim. Where he lived in his home town, he could walk out the front door and walk for miles in the woods without ever seeing anything or anyone else. Growing up, he developed a number of interests, but he especially loved woodworking. He was a bright student who had a knack for mathematics. He learned early on the value of discipline and self-assuredness. Every day to go to high school, Ken would walk from his house to the bus stop, take the bus to the ferry, the ferry to Brooklyn , there he took the subway closer to high school and then walked a few blocks to get to the high school. This venture was about an hour and a half. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1972 before leaving his home town in New York to move across the country to Los Angeles, where he lived on $5 a week. He attended college at UCLA where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in 1975, living on his own and making ends meet.
For work, Ken was employed for 14 years with LPL Financial where he rose up in ranks to Senior Vice President before moving on to Waddell & Reed for 4 years. Coincidentally, Waddell & Reed was bought out by LPL in 2021. Early in Ken’s career, he would find paychecks that he never cashed out. He went from living life as a college kid to earning more money than he knew how to spend! This was a testament to his work ethic and understanding that anything is possible if you work hard and stay focused. He worked in financials until his retirement in 2012 when he relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Ken’s greatest role in life was as a father and husband. On January 24, 2016 he married Gladys on the beach of Costa Rica. With this marriage joined their families, and he was blessed to have two children, Cassie and KC; and two step-children, Megan and Ashley. He was also blessed with three step-grandchildren, Jayce, Maki, and Stevie. Ken brought joy into their home and the life he and Gladys had together. He made sure that his family never wanted for anything. His family was rounded out by his three cats, Birdie, Bogey, and Putter.
Outside of work, whenever he had free time, Ken had a number of hobbies. He continued to love woodworking, but also found an interest in photography, the stock market, politics, and traveling. He could always be found watching FOX News or going out bike riding to stay healthy. Ken also made many friends through MeetUp. Whenever it came time to take vacations, he loved to travel and see the world. Some of his favorite trips were on an Alaskan cruise and a Baltic Sea cruise.
Ken passed away on August 26, 2022 at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada after a battle with pneumonia and COVID-19. He is survived by his wife, Gladys; his children, Cassie, KC, Ashley, and Megan; his grandchildren, Jayce, Maki and Stevie; and his brothers, Jim and Richard. Services were held at Palm Southwest Mortuary in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Commitment is a key word that can be used to describe the life of Ken Charles Muntz Sr. He was committed to living the life of a good man who was both practical and trustworthy. He was committed to the traditional values that he upheld his entire life. He committed himself to being a hard worker who expected the same effort in return from those around him. Most of all, he was committed to those he knew and loved. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend, and he will be deeply missed.
