Lawrence Baker was born on August 14, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois, to Louis and Adelia Baker, both of whom preceded him in death. He was the youngest of five children and is also preceded in death by his sisters Sandra McLin, Doris Baker, Donna Jean Baker, and his twin brother, Louis Baker.
Lawrence was raised in a loving, God-fearing home, where he came to know and love the Lord at an early age. He received his early education at Hess Elementary School and later graduated from John Marshall High School on Chicago’s West Side. Lawrence was known for his sense of humor and his willingness to help anyone in need. Lawrence loved to make people laugh and had a natural gift for bringing laughter to those around him. His comedic personality often made him the center of attention, and his presence could light up any room.
In 1990, Lawrence married the love of his life, Evelyn Baker, whom he affectionately called “Honey Bun” and together they shared 36 beautiful years. Evelyn remained his devoted companion through every season of life, caring for him faithfully and lovingly until his peaceful transition.
After high school, Lawrence began a long and dedicated career with Illinois Bell, where he worked for more than 20 years. He later continued his commitment to service with the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), remaining there until his retirement in 2011. In 2019, Lawrence and Evelyn relocated to Las Vegas, embracing the warm climate and enjoying a well-deserved break from Chicago’s long, harsh winters.
As long as can be remembered, Lawrence had a deep passion for music and cars—interests that became defining parts of his life. If an event involved music or automobiles, Lawrence was sure to be there, fully in his element. He loved collecting stereo equipment and took great joy in visiting thrift stores in search of hidden treasures and new additions to his collection.
He always took great pride in his automobiles and made sure he was driving the latest and finest model off the assembly line. Lawrence would spend countless hours washing and
waxing his cars, caring for them with the same enthusiasm and attention he gave to everything he loved. His cars were truly his pride and joy.
His enthusiasm for these hobbies brought him tremendous happiness and created countless memories for those who shared his interests.
On February 22, 2026, Lawrence ascended to his eternal home in heaven.
He leaves to honor and celebrate his life, his devoted wife, Evelyn Baker; his children, Andre Lomax (Keshia), Lisa Baker Sullivan (John), Tracey Baker; and his stepson, Larry Smith (Melissa). He is also survived by his nieces Adelia (Tonya) Davis, Larise Baker, and La Shawyne McLin; his nephew Kenneth Baker; five beloved grandchildren; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends who will forever hold his memory close.
Lawrence’s laughter and vibrant spirit will remain a lasting legacy in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
