Born in Vietnam, November 2, 1951, to a life of poverty. Since early age of 8, Mommy had to carry the heavy responsibilities of caring for multiple siblings and the home. She carried such burdens until she was married, where she continues the responsibilities with children and home of her own. She often told me stories of such times, with sadden voice and teary eyes… Those were deeply emotional memories.
Though Mommy had little opportunities to get an education: she taught herself to read Chinese and became a damn good cook. Best we’ve ever known. Her favorite pastime was reading story books, playing cards with friends, and she have been known as “Queen of Desserts” by the community, through the sale of the delicious desserts she cooked every day. We’ve are so lucky to have grown up with her desserts.
The turning point of life came when we migrated to America: with $500 to our family, Mommy and Daddy, and the 4 of us, with a metal trunk holding everything we owned. A brave act, we admire every day.
With the determination and discipline of hard work and a frugal lifestyle, we would achieve the American dream. A dream Mommy would not have even imagined in earlier years.
When her burdens were lifted, and it was time to enjoy the golden years. Those years were brief; though, blessed with travels, joyous moments, and love of family.
She had left us on April 4, 2022. She had left us with so much happy memories. She had left us with a caring Father, brothers and sisters, and grandchildren big and small. Most notably through her values of kindness, honesty, forgiveness, and unconditional love; she has left us with a family bond of immeasurable value. A legacy we will continue and pass down for generations to come.
