At the tender age of 92, Rachel Clutter died Friday, May 2nd, 2025, in her Henderson, NV home. In the weeks and days leading up to her passing she was with her children and/or grandchildren nearly every day.
Rachel was born in Larned, Kansas on September 30th, 1932, to Jesus and Francisca {Lopez} Ramirez. She had what she described as a “normal country childhood” which included pumping and carrying water for cooking, drinking, bathing and watering the garden! Naturally athletic and adventurous, she loved barrel walking on empty 55-gallon drums and playing tag, running fearlessly after one another along the top boards of the nearby cattle pens.
A born traveler, she flew to Germany to marry her high school sweetheart, Bob Clutter on August 22nd, 1953. When Bob completed his service in the U.S. Army the couple settled in Mount Hope, Kansas. In 1973 the family moved to Kodiak, Alaska. Rachel’s job with the school district required that she visit schools in coastal villages up and down the Aleutian Chain. Later, after relocating to Anchorage, she took a position with Arco in Prudhoe Bay, flying back and forth at two-week intervals to one of the northernmost corners of Alaska.
Faith was at the center of her life. A devout Catholic, she prayed daily for her loved ones. When she could no longer attend church in person, she faithfully watched mass on television each Sunday. She was also a fierce competitor whether it was softball as a young girl, playing cards, especially Pitch and Bridge, with her many lifelong friends in Kansas or recently, playing with anyone who wanted a no-holds-barred game of Gin Rummy.
Rachel was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Francisca and Jesus, her sisters Marie, Lou, Rebecca & Helen; her brothers Jess, Joe and Tony as well as her former husband Bob.
She will be deeply missed by sons Michael & Martin, daughters Michelle, Marissa and Maureen; grandchildren Justine, Curtis, Erin, Ryan and Ethan; as well as her nieces, nephews and many dear friends from Mount Hope, Andale and Colwich Kansas.
