

Remigio Piluden Kawi, Jr. was born on October 14, 1938 in Besao, Mt. Province, Philippines. He was 81 years old when he peacefully passed away on November 17, 2019 at his residence in Las Vegas after fighting a hard battle against cancer.
Remigio will be missed by his loving wife, Rosalind, and the rest of his family. He is survived by his children, Helen (Reuel), Marge (Courtney), Clare (Fr. Jun), and Jennifer; and his grandchildren, Nicole, Jessica, RJ, and Ellen. He was the second child of Remigio “Maxil” Kawi, Sr. and Dalmacia Piluden Kawi. His surviving brothers and sisters are Pauline (Canada), Anne (Nevada), Sofia (England), Lucian (California), Bonifacio (Washington), Florence (Philippines), and Elizabeth (New York). His siblings who predeceased him were Fernando, Sergio, Prospero, Angeline, and Petrona.
Remigio received his Mechanical Engineering degree from Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila (now known as Mapua University) and Mining Engineering degree from St. Louis University in Baguio City. He was in the very first batch of mining graduates and placed #4 in the Philippine National Board Exams for Mining Engineers. He was employed in Bontoc as a Mechanical Engineer and then worked at many mining companies in the northern part of the Philippines in Lepanto, Itogon-Suyoc, Benguet Exploration, Philex, and Santo Niño Mines. He assumed various roles including Superintendent in the mechanical department at Suyoc mines. He also worked in Aklan and was self-employed for a period of time.
Subsequently, Remigio immigrated to the US to join his wife in January 1986 where he initially started in the mining industry at Searchlight, Nevada and then worked in refrigeration and air conditioning until his retirement. He is a founding member and one of the first advisers of BIBAAK Las Vegas, formally organized in October 2002. He became a valuable support to the growth of the Igorot congregation at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. He also volunteered his time and services at the former St. Luke’s Episcopal Church building. During his retirement, he had the opportunity to travel back and forth to the Philippines, within the US, and around the world. He lived a full and happy life!
As a loyal husband, dependable father, and loving grandfather, he set a great example for us and his memory will be in our hearts forever.
