Richard Lee Buchanan, 85, of Las Vegas, a retired Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer, died on Saturday, May 21, 2022. Born May 15, 1937 in Long Beach, California, he served Metro from 1961-1989.
“Buck" served in the United States Navy from 1955 - 1960 as a musician, diver, and ship mechanic. His assignment to the U.S.S. Burton Island, an Icebreaker, took him to the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans. After the Navy, he continued a life of public service by joining the Las Vegas City Police Department, where he became a founding member of the K-9 unit. Rising to Sergeant, he served the city of Las Vegas from 1961-1989, retiring from the LVMPD as a detective.
A generous, kind, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed western movies, photography, and building and repairing firearms. He was a man of few words but much integrity. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Marne; children, Robin Basham, Pamela Buchanan, and Danielle Buchanan; stepchildren, Rudine (Eileen) Borgato, Sergio Borgato, Eloisa Borgato, and Ed (Danielle) Borgato; nineteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; and sisters, Deanna, Beverly, and Linda (deceased). A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2022 from 10-11am at Palm Southwest Mortuary, 7979 W. Warm Springs Rd. Las Vegas, with a funeral service to follow at 11am. Private interment will take place at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City. Arrangements entrusted to Palm Southwest Mortuary, Las Vegas.
