It is with deep sadness, yet profound gratitude for a life well lived, that the Edgar family announces the passing of their beloved patriarch, Thomas Patrick Edgar. Thomas passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family, on January 31, 2026, at the age of 88.
Thomas was born on July 20, 1937, in Huntington, Indiana, to Roena Anastasia and Charles Augustus Edgar. The family finds comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his one true love of 67 years, his wife, Rebecca Jane Edgar. Rebecca passed in February of 2025, and not a day went by thereafter that Tom did not speak of her—or speak to her. Her photograph was never far from his reach, a constant reminder of their enduring bond.
Thomas Patrick Edgar, known affectionately as Tom, Dad, and Pop, was a country boy at heart. He grew up on a small family farm near the Erie Rail Trail along the Wabash River, a place he remembered with great fondness. Life in a rural area, combined with the many daily farm chores, made it difficult to find other children to spend time with, so Tom found companionship among the animals on the farm.
His favorite was his goat, Billy. Tom trained Billy to pull him in a harnessed wagon so they could explore the surrounding countryside together. Billy returned that affection wholeheartedly, faithfully waiting each afternoon at the bus stop to greet Tom after school. From these early years, Tom developed a deep and lasting love for animals that remained with him throughout his life.
After graduating from high school, Tom proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1963 aboard the USS Intrepid, where he worked on the aircraft maintenance team. He greatly enjoyed his service, particularly his time sailing the Mediterranean Sea. He often shared stories of the breathtaking beauty he encountered, with the Greek Islands remaining his all-time favorite. These experiences sparked a lifelong love of adventure and travel, which he later shared with his wife and their two sons.
Tom was known for his many hobbies and talents, which ranged from car restoration to leather tooling. His beautifully restored 1957 and 1958 Chevrolet Cameos earned numerous “Best in Show” awards. He also found great joy in crafting custom tooled leather pieces, which he lovingly gifted to friends and family.
Tom spent his professional years working as a contractor in Las Vegas, Nevada, and in 1972, he and his wife built and operated Cardinal Plumbing. Together, they successfully ran the business for 35 years, making it a true reflection of their perseverance, partnership, and dedication.
Thomas leaves behind a legacy of hard work, commitment, and love. Those who knew him well often described him as “salt of the earth” – a man of integrity whose word could be trusted and relied upon. Tom honored his role as husband and father with every fiber of his being, holding his family’s happiness, safety, and prosperity above all else. He was a loyal and respected friend to many, and his presence truly made the world a better place. He will be deeply and fondly missed by all who knew him.
Thomas Patrick Edgar is survived by his sons, Rodney Charles (Sandra Chantaca) Edgar and Steven Wayne (Carolyn) Edgar; and his grandson, Dalton Slade Montoya.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Augustus Edgar; his mother, Roena Anastasia Edgar; his sister, Edna Mae Marineau; and his brothers, John (Joanne) Edgar, Charles (Marcy) Edgar, and Richard (Pauline) Edgar.
Those planning an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift in honor of Thomas Patrick Edgar to The Wounded Warrior Project (https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org
