March 11, 1928 – September 7, 2016
Yvonne was born on March 11, 1928 to Charles and Alta Mousseau. She grew up on a rural farm in Michigan with her two brothers, and three sisters, later moving to Detroit. She grew up in a Christian family whose values carried her through life until the day she died.
After the war in 1947, she married a very handsome man named Charles McClain. Chuck was in college on the GI bill when he and Yvonne started their family in Detroit where Andrea, Michael, and Jeanne were born. Upon completion of Chuck’s degree in industrial design, the family moved to Los Angeles, CA and along came Robert!!! Now they were a family of six and their great life adventure was underway.
Yvonne’s dream was to become a teacher. With four young children, running a home, and the help of Chuck she went through college, (mostly at night), and received her bachelors degree in English from Long Beach State University. She began her career teaching high school English, and continued for 30 years in Los Angeles, New Orleans, and San Diego. Upon returning to California, she earned a Masters Degree in Multicultural Studies from San Diego State University. Her high school students adored her, often came to her home, and together they produced award winning yearbooks and school newspapers.
Yvonne and Chuck valued education so highly that all four of their children received college degrees and went into productive careers in education, medicine, and aerospace. They were very proud of each of their children, loving and supporting them throughout their lives.
Upon Yvonne’s retirement she assumed a regional leadership role for Outreach International, an organization working to eradicate the deepest poverty in developing countries. Outreach International kept her busy for many years working in development and traveling to many of the countries involved. She began the idea of “fast a thons” (fundraisers) for youth groups at her church to contribute to this wonderful cause.
Yvonne and Chuck also traveled the world together, enjoying the cultures of many foreign countries, and set foot on nearly all of the continents. After traipsing around the world, they made their home in the Coronado Cays and enjoyed sailing on the San Diego Bay, going to Catalina, and Baja California. Yvonne was Chuck’s first Mate!!!
Henderson, Nevada became their home for their final retirement years, enjoying many of their family members close by. They shared daily companionship, meals, entertainment and love. And don’t forget the many visits from all her little chickadees!!!
Yvonne was a devoted lifetime member of The Community of Christ church, holding the office of Elder in the priesthood. She loved contributing to the many congregations that she attended throughout her life. She had an overwhelming faith in God and was always there for people in need, graciously accepting any task given to her and was an inspiration to many that knew her.
Yvonne was the kindest person you would ever meet. She loved Jesus, her husband, her children and grand children. She also loved the ocean, sailing, traveling, teaching, entertaining, giving to others, life, and Shakespeare! If you knew Yvonne, you knew her for the smile that was always on her face and the children around her feet.
We love you and thank you for helping shape us into the best people we can be.
