Donald Gene Johnston, 86, passed away on January 25, 2026. He was born on July 9, 1939, in Lebanon, Oregon, and later made his home in Lago Vista, Texas, where he spent his later years close to family.
Donald proudly served in the United States Air Force for 21 years, a career that took him all over the world. During his distinguished service, he received numerous honors, including the Bronze Star, among other medals awarded for his dedication and sacrifice. He was deeply proud of his time in the Air Force, and some of the most cherished memories shared by family were the stories he told from those years of service to his country.
He was the youngest of nine siblings, born to Caroline Eliza Johnston and William Henry Johnston. In July 1962, he married the love of his life, Lanelle, beginning a marriage that remained one of the most meaningful chapters of his life.
After retiring from the Air Force, Donald continued his commitment to service through his work with the City of San Angelo, before retiring for good and moving closer to family — something that brought him great comfort and joy.
Donald was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lanelle; his daughter, Carolyn; and his stepson, Brent.
He is survived by his stepdaughter, Greta Jones, and her husband, Mike; his son-in-law, David McCormick; his grandchildren, Donele Johnston, Cole McCormick, and Michelle Jones; his great-grandchildren, Julian and Dylan Herrera, Russell McCormick, and Noah, Ezra, and Gabby Zamora; as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews whom he loved dearly.
