

Audrey J. Matters, formerly Audrey J. Winters, age 85, passed away on Tuesday February 14, 2017 in her residence. She was born September 22, 1931 to Oscar W. and Caroline (Haag) Winters in Lebanon, PA. She was married to Charles H. Matters, and they had three children. Audrey was a graduate of Lebanon High School and a proud grad of the Class of 1949 of that school. She attended several colleges in the Berks County area over the course of several years. She was hired as a secretary in Lebanon High School in her senior year and worked there until her marriage, when she worked as a secretary/stenographer at Millersville University for both Dr. William Duncan, a future Millersville college president, and part-time for then president Dr. D. L. Beamesderfer. Later, she was hired as a stenographer for Met-Ed in their corporate offices in Berks County and also as an administrative assistant for their holding company, General Public Utilities (GPU), in their Reading offices and in their Harrisburg Governmental offices. During her retirement, she was hired as a secretary part-time for Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with Representative Peter Zug. Audrey’s past memberships include: Junior Women’s Club of Lebanon, the Whitfield Women’s Club of Berks County, Met-Ed Retirees Association, Wilshire Recreation Association, Union Canal Park/Tunnel Preservation Association, Reading Museum and Planetarium, Den Mother for Boy Scouts of America Troop 429, Assistant Leader for Campfire Girls, and a proud worker for the LHS Class of 1949. She enjoyed music and performed as a pianist early in her life. During that time, she alo enjoyed ice skating and swimming; later on, crafts and gardening. She volunteered for various charities and groups, especially for children, and as an activist for the awareness and improvement of humane animal welfare. She was a member of the West Wyomissing Chapel in Berks County for 40+ years. Surviving are her husband: Charles H. Matters; son: Todd A. Matters, married to Cheryl (Halstead) Matters of Limerick; daughter: Kristin A, Matters, Newmanstown; grandsons: Joshua Matters and Jacob Matters of Limerick; brother: Dale Winters, Myerstown; nieces and nephews. A beloved son: Chuckie Matters preceded her in death in 1970 as well as a brother: Ronald W. Winters. A funeral will be held on Sunday at 3:00 P.M. in the Rohland Funeral Home 508 Cumberland St., Lebanon, PA 17042. There will be a viewing on Saturday from 2 to 4 P.M. and Sunday from 2:00 P.M. until the time of service in the funeral home. Private burial will be made in the Covenant Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Children’s Foundation, 34th Street and Civic Center Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA 19104 or to any humane society of your choosing.
