Ed was born and raised in Grapeland, Texas, where he spent his early years growing up on a peanut and watermelon farm, beginning a life marked by hard work, service, and devotion to family. In 1983, he moved to Alabama while working in the steel industry, a career that reflected his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for those he loved.
Ed proudly served his country in the United States Navy, a chapter of his life that he carried with pride.
Following his retirement from the steel industry, Ed worked as a bus driver for Leeds City Schools. He then faced significant adversity after a life-altering injury that left him paralyzed. True to his character, he met this challenge with remarkable resilience, determination, and an unwaveringly positive spirit. Ed never allowed his circumstances to define him; instead, he continued to encourage those around him with his optimism, humor, and quiet strength. His ability to persevere through hardship became a powerful example of grace, courage, and faith for his family and all who knew him. He went on to work as a substitute teacher, where he became a familiar and trusted face to many students. He later worked at Lowe’s, enjoying the opportunity to stay active and connect with people.
Throughout his life, Ed’s faith in God remained steadfast and unwavering. It was a source of strength in both times of joy and in the challenges he faced, especially following his injury. His trust in God guided his outlook, anchored his resilience, and shaped the way he met adversity—with peace, hope, and grace. Ed’s faith was not only something he professed, but something he lived daily through his patience, kindness, and perseverance.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Shaw, Sr. and Kelena Shaw, and his brother, Henry L. Shaw.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Velletta Shaw; his daughter, Kristi Gibson (Joe); his sons, John E. Shaw (Cindy) and Jason N. Shaw (Lisa); his grandchildren, Morgan Gulledge (Brent), Ashton Gibson (Benjamin Jennings), Delaney Shaw, and Jacob Shaw; and his cherished great-granddaughter, Lila Kate Gulledge. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Shaw Goar, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
