Jean Cater, a former educator, a devout Presbyterian, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 17th, 2025 surrounded by family at her home in Moody, Alabama. She is survived by her husband, John; sisters Helen Turpin (Harry) and Barbara Love (David); her daughters Sara Gamble (Jason) and Rebecca Irvin (Kyle); grandchildren Jacob and Claire Gamble, and Sam (Abigail) and Addie Irvin; and great-grandchildren Avram and Wells Irvin.
Jean was born on October 12th, 1945 in Laurel, Mississippi to Fred and Nelda Clarke. She grew up in Mobile, but spent most of her life in Birmingham, where she was a longtime public school teacher. She met John Cater at a high school church retreat in Montreat, North Carolina, at the top of Lookout Mountain. They married in 1967 and lived happily together for almost 58 years. During that time, they raised two daughters, traveled around the country, watched countless Alabama football games with friends, and enjoyed southern gospel music.
Despite the unfillable hole left by her passing, we find comfort in the hymns “Amazing Grace” and “Abide With Me,” which tells us that even in death, he will be there. And we know she’ll be waiting there for us – with a hug and a smile – when our time comes.
Graveside services will be held Saturday June 28, 2025 at 12:30PM at Forest Crest Cemetery and visitation will be Saturday June 28, 2025 from 11-12 at Kilgroe Funeral Home - Leeds.
