On behalf of our family id like to Welcome you to the Celebration service for Rita Evans. she was a beautiful, strong and multi faceted woman of faith who was a champion and cheerleader for her family and her family of faith around the world. Whether you knew her as Mom, grandma, aunt Rita or Sister Evans she was an energetic example of grace and faith; who loved God, her family and to see people touched by the power of the Holy Spirit. As we've sat and recounted the stories and memories of her life this past week3 words continue to resonate in my heart that encapsulate the legacy of my grandmother...she was a woman of grace, a woman of Faith and a woman of honor.
She was the poster child of sophistication, modesty and "appropriateness". I can remember going to her house even as a young boy and the table would be set with linen tablecloths, cloth napkins, crystal goblets and every item was set with elegance. You couldn't just place the jam jar on the table, it needed a special serving dish. my wife commented later in our married life that it didn't matter if you were 2 or 62 you would be treated graciously like you were the most important person in the world. She had the gift of hospitality and wanted every moment to be filled with an understanding that YOU were a special guest in her home. She loved to serve people, to give. it was her way of saying i love you. You couldn't come to her house without being offered something to eat. it didn't matter how many times you said no she was going to make you something. and you couldn't leave without taking something with you...even if you didn't need it. Whether you were a student in her class or a guest in her home, she wanted you to have the very best that she could offer!
She was also a woman of great faith. touched by God at a young age and filled with the Holy Spirit she had a hunger for the Word and for prayer. She was a powerful intercessor. Whenever we would talk i would ask how she was and how things were going, and without fail she would begin to tell me about the beautiful and powerful time in prayer she had with the ladies in her weekly prayer group, "We're praying for you Jonathan." was a phrase i heard weekly. She loved to pray. I often say, I would not be here without the fervent prayers of my grandmother. Even though when i was young and acting foolishly i didn't always like WHAT she would pray, " Lord, let the Axe fall on Jonathan, but spare his life" ..really grandma...the axe?! But it did. My life was changed. God answered her prayers. And I am forever grateful .She also loved the Church and she loved God's people. Whenever she was asked to speak she would humbly and enthusiastically begin pouring over her notes weeks in advance. it didn't matter if it was a woman's bible study with 5 ladies or a revival conference half way across the world she would study and prepare with great excitement. "People NEED the Fresh and the Familiar." she would often say. Many of you know that if you had a question or needed some notes on Pneumatology, glosolalia , the tabernacle or just about anything she was an abundant well of insight, revelation and encouragement. /She knew how to write in shorthand, little squiggly lines and dots a language only she could decipher and she would take copious notes whenever someone was preaching. she would tell me "the faintest ink is more powerful than the strongest memory.' whenever she sent me a sermon that ministered to her, it wouldn't be in bullet points, but a fully transcribed message, complete with her favorite thoughts and things that she thought i needed to hear. she truly loved the Word of God!
She was also a woman of HONOR. She was married to her husband and friend George Evans for over 50 years! She loved that man in every way and was a living example of honor even when she may have thought differently. She also loved her family. it didn't matter if she was chiding you or cheering you on....you always knew she wanted the best for you. God's best for you. She taught me a great many things, from how to make scrambled eggs and press a dress shirt to the importance of prayer, virtues of diligent study and the immeasurable value of honor and perseverance even in the midst of trials.
She was my friend, my encourager, my grandma and although I will forever miss her i know she would continue to say to us, "Pray, press in and move forward. You are in the hands of The Lord.'
