

Born August 9, 1931 in Catawba County, James was a son of the late James Lewis and Ollie Helton Pate. James was a Master Sargent in the Army for 20 years. He later worked in the Caldwell County School System. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Eleanor Louise Pate; two sisters, Peggy Johnson and Marie Gilbert; and one brother, Jean Pate.
Survivors include three sons, James Oliver Pate, Jr.(wife Debbie) of Farmington, NH, Tommy Austin Pate and Raymond Arnold Pate(wife Lori) both of Las Vegas, NV; three daughters, Marilyn Inez Pollarine(husband Wayne) of Boyertown, PA, Mara Lee German and Catherine Louise Barnett (husband Shane) both of Lenoir; four sisters, Myrtle Gilchrist of Columbia SC, Leona Lynch of Newton, NC, Margaret Berry (husband Ken) of Maiden, NC, Marsha Simpson of Newton, NC; two brothers, Jack Pate ( wife Phyllis) of Fayetteville, NC, and Grady Pate (wife Regina) of Maiden, NC; Twelve grandchildren, Ian (Jill) Pollarine, Alison ( Chris) Chase, Mary Pate, Jill Coffey, Matthew (Rachel) Nadeau, Elijah Pate, Sarah (Frankie) Holt, Evan Pate, Cannedy Pate, Joshua (Chrystal) Pate, Aaron Pate, Brianna Barnett and 13 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 3:00 PM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Connelly Springs Road in Lenoir. Interment will follow the service at the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir with full military honors.
The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM prior to the service.
