Viola Mahaffey Simmons

Mrs. Simmons was born in Wilkes County to the late Zebrick Mahaffey and Etta Pope Mahaffey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband James C. Simmons; a daughter Mary Sanders; a son, James Simmons; brothers, David Mahaffey, Charlie Mahaffey, Ike Mahaffey, Jim Mahaffey and Billy Mahaffey; a sister, Mary Sipes.

She was a member of Sand Mountain Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Ira Simmons of Lenoir, daughters, Virginia Chester of Lenoir, Juanita Coleman of Hickory, Alice Brown of Wilkes County and Dorothy Coffey of Lenoir; a sister, Alice Mahaffey Bell of Raleigh; 17 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Simmons will be held Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at Pisgah Baptist Church with Reverend Ronnie Miller and Pastor Jerry Shatley officiating. Burial will follow at Elk Creek Family cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Pendry’s Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be John Simmons, Barry Jr. Brown, Troy Davis, Matt McGee, James Simmons and Jesse Simmons.

The family respectfully requests that memorials be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645.
