

Walter grew up in Green Ridge, Pennsylvania, and was a Marine Corps veteran of WWII. He joined the Corps as soon as he turned 17 and served with distinction in the Pacific.
In 1950 Walter married Esther M. Sweezy in New Brunswick, NJ. They raised their family in Hillsborough, NJ. He was hired as a lineman for PSEG and continued in its employ for over 40 years, retiring as their safety supervisor and an instructor at their lineman school.
He and Esther moved to Hudson upon retirement. They were both active members of the Mount Zion Baptist Church of Hudson. In more recent years, he served as the bugler for the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard and served in that capacity as long as his health permitted.
Walter is survived by his son Craig Callis and spouse Cheryl of DeForest, Wisconsin, and their four children: Graham Callis, Jason Enders, Emily Greene and Maryjane Lueck and their respective spouses and eleven children. He is also survived by daughter Melinda Callis and spouse Gerard De Luca of Middlesex, NJ and their son Gabriel De Luca and his spouse.
Walter was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Esther M. Callis, his parents, Walter and Ethel Callis, and sister Betty Sue Leach.
A visitation will be held at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral home on Friday, December 29, 2023 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm. He will be interred next to his beloved Esther at the Mount Zion Church Cemetery in Hudson. Military honors will be provided by the US Marines and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
