Cathy Hughes passed away October 22nd, 2010, of cancer. A woman of God, she remained faithful and kept a positive outlook throughout her illness. She never complained and continued to help and inspire others even in the midst of her own struggle.
Born June 7th, 1950, in Richmond, Virginia, Cathy attended Longwood College where she majored in History and became the first in her family to graduate from college. She later earned her Master’s degree in Education and devoted much of her life to teaching.
She taught at Prince Edward County High School where she met the love of her life and husband of thirty six years, Charles Hughes. She was the cheerleading sponsor and Charles coached basketball. The couple shared a classroom, and thus began a long tradition of Cathy being unafraid of informing Charles the “right” way to run things. During this time, Cathy and Charles welcomed the first of four beautiful daughters into their life. They named her Ann.
Cathy later taught at Colonial Heights, where she was the head of the History department.
In the summer of 1982, she and her small family moved out West to Texas for Charles’s residency program in Family Medicine in Lubbock, TX. A few months later, their second daughter, Sara, was born.
The growing family moved to Denver City and two more daughters, Sharon and Deborah, were born. The family settled in Levelland, TX, where they joined South Plains Church. Cathy loved the Lord with all her heart.
Her daughters were the light of Cathy’s life. She stopped teaching in the school system and poured her energy into teaching her own daughters. She delighted in taking them to their lessons and sporting events. Her daughters always looked to their mother for wisdom and guidance in matters great and small.
It became a tradition for the entire family to gather at her home for Christmas. Cathy decorated the house from top to bottom and the entire house would smell of pies, pine, and her special hot cider. Cathy was a woman with a generous heart, and loved the simple act of giving.
Her last teaching position was at Levelland Intermediate School. She painted her classroom walls a bright apple green and stayed up late at night scouring the internet for creative ways to teach math. She was a teacher who truly cared about the success of each of her students.
Her character was summed up by Charles shortly after her death when he said of her, “I never deserved a woman like you. You were the strongest woman I ever knew. Crazy. Head-strong. But you certainly knew right from wrong, and you loved and took care of us all.”
She is survived by her husband, Charles Hughes, her brothers Victor Fadool and Al Fadool, and her sister Marianna LaRocca. Her legacy lives on through her four daughters, Ann Bass, Sara Brinker, Sharon Gnagi, and Deborah Hughes, and four grandchildren, Miriam, Lillian, and Abigail Bass, and Oliver Brinker.
Services will be 10 A.M.,Saturday, October 30, 2010 at South Plains Church in Level-land, TX with Pastor Eddie Trice, officiating. Burial will be in City of Levelland Cemetery under direction of George Price Funeral Home, Levelland. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 6PM until 8PM on Friday, October 29, 2010.
