

Memorial services for Fern Maddera, 88, of Levelland will be at 2:00 pm, Thursday, September 5, 2013 at First Baptist Church, Levelland with Dr. Brian Hill, pastor, First Baptist Church, Littlefield, officiating. .The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Fern died on Monday, September 2, 2013 in Levelland.
Fern was born on January 20, 1925 in Albany, Oklahoma to Fred and Velma (Chapman) Johnson. She married Howard Maddera on October 13, 1950 in Durant, Oklahoma and he preceded her in death on February 19, 2003. They moved to Levelland in 1955 from Post, Texas. Fern received her Bachelor’s Degree from Southeastern Oklahoma in Durant and then went on to receive her Master’s degree from Texas Tech. She taught in the Levelland Schools for 32 years and retired in 1986. She worked at N.T.S. for a time.
Fern was a member of the Democratic Party and served as a delegate to the National Convention. She was appointed to the Texas Land Commission by governor Ann Richards and served until she resigned. She was a Silver Haired Legislator.
Survivors include two daughters: Marianne Thoms and Sharon Atchison, both of Levelland, Texas a brother: Bill Johnson of Dallas, Texas; two sisters: Claudia Hamilton of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Karen Swindle of Fort Worth, Texas; three grandchildren: Shawn Reed, Matthew Reed, and Lucas Brink and six great-grandchildren: Kyler and Layton Reed, Morgan and Sydney Reed, Cooper Brink and Addi Coats.
