Thurman Henry (Dobby) Dobson passed from this world to join his beloved wife Lodema, with their God, on June 3, 2010 in the presence of his children and grandchildren. He was proud to become the Dobson to reach the oldest age known by the family in June, 2010. Dobby was born on April 3, 1920 to Henry Jefferson Dobson and Amy Eudora Richardson Dobson in Willow, Oklahoma. He moved to Whitharral, Texas with his family in 1926 and was a resident of Hockley County in and around Levelland for 84 years.
Dobby attended high school in Whitharral and became a farmer on the home place with his father afterwards. When World War II broke out Dobby joined the Air Force and spent 3 years overseas, from 1943-1945, serving his country and helping insure the freedom and liberty we all still enjoy. He returned home to Texas in 1945 after an honorable discharge from the Air Force.
Before going overseas Dobby married his sweetheart of many years, Lodema Louise Garnett, on January 29, 1943. Born to this union were four children: Mickey, Mike, Gayla and Amy. The couple was an inspiration to all who knew them for 63 years of marriage.
Dobby farmed around the Levelland area for 40 years, until retiring in Levelland at the age of 65. He was most well known for his friendly outgoing attitude, his sharp wit, kind heart and as a famous song writer said, "Dad a quiet man whose gentle voice was seldom heard could borrow money at the bank simply on his word." Perhaps the greatest honor a man could hope to have at his death is to know, as Dobby did, that nobody has a bad word to say about him.
Dobby was preceded in death by his wife Lodema; his parents, Henry and Amy; a sister, Opal Howard and two grandchildren: Mickey Randall Dobson and Brighton Carroll Dobson who died at birth.
He will be missed and remembered by his children: Mickey and Marla Dobson of Midland, Mike and Chris Dobson of Levelland, Gayla and Nick McCulloch of Lubbock and Amy and Lynn Waters of Wolfforth; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Services for Dobby will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Cactus Drive Church of Christ in Levelland, under the direction of George Price Funeral Home. Interment was in the Levelland City Cemetery afterward. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 5PM until 7:00 PM on Friday, June 4, 2010.
Pallbearers were grandsons: Brandon Dobson, Brad Dobson, Scott Dobson, Landon Waters, Darren Waters, Derek Waters, Matt McCulloch and Taylor Condit.
