Born November 21, 1937, in Philadelphia, Bernie lived a life rooted in family, simple joys, and faith.
A graduate of Delhaas High School, Bernie proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. In May 1964, he married the love of his life, Lorraine Barron (Poltorak), and together they built a beautiful life filled with devotion, laughter, and a playful bond that endured through 61 years of marriage. He was known to “pick on her” in an always affectionate way that only he could,a reflection of the special bond they shared. Even during his illness, Bernie’s greatest concern was Lorraine’s well-being; his love and gentle protection never wavered.
Bernie was a true outdoorsman. He earned his captain’s license and found his greatest happiness on the water, especially when fishing or boating with his children and grandchildren. He passed this love of the outdoors to his entire family. An avid fisherman and hunter, Bernie also enjoyed tinkering—whether in the garden, fixing cars, caring for his boat, or working on self-made projects that reflected his creativity. He loved lending a hand on projects and always had ideas to make things better. If there was a project to be done, Bernie was the first to arrive and the last to leave. He believed that hard work and helping others led to a rewarding life, values he instilled in those he loved.
He was known for his infectious smile, sense of humor, and gift for storytelling. Hours were spent around the table or on the porch (at his Mystic Islands home), sharing vivid memories and life lessons with family and friends. Bernie’s deep faith in God guided his life, reflected in his gratitude, humility, and kindness.
Bernie is survived by his devoted wife Lorraine; his children Bernie (Michelle) and Debbie (Lou); and his cherished grandchildren Brandon, Tyler, Austin, Amanda, and Nick. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna Barron, and his siblings Joseph, Ann, Herbert, and Billy. Bernie was the last surviving sibling, a proud patriarch whose legacy of love and faith will live on in his family.
