Born in Bristol, the son of the late Helen M. (Frank) and Richard N. Shenberger, David has been a life long resident of Lower Bucks County.
In 1982, David was diagnosed with acute leukemia while still in High School. He was the first successful bone marrow transplant in Philadelphia.
He was employed with Amtrak and PATH for many years. He was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis, but continued to work for several years, defying the odds. The disease progressed and David was forced to go on disability.
In 2015, David received a lung transplant. After a speedy recovery, he went back to work in 2017 for several years.
An avid sports fan, particularly the Philadelphia teams, he held Eagles season tickets for 20 years. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and living life. David loved hanging out with friends and family. He was very close to his nephews, Ryan and Marty.
David was a member of the Patients and Caregivers Facebook Support Group. He was a wonderful mentor and counselor and he had a huge impact on the organ donation community, working to raise awareness and fundraising for the Gift of Life Program.
Unwaveringly optimistic, he fought for his health and his life while still inspiring others.
He loved hard, he played hard.
David is survived by his siblings, Rick Shenberger (Sheri), Mike Shenberger (Cecelia), Patti Shenberger and Marcy Balent.
He will also be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews, Melinda Shenberger, Marty Balent (Lauren), Amy Balent, Jenny Balent (Adam) and Ryan Shenberger.
He was predeceased by his parents and his niece, Kelly Balent.
Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, June 18, 2022, from 12:00 until 1:00 pm at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown, where his funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm. Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's memory to the Gift of Life Program, 401 N. 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123.
