

Donald L. ShafferDonald L. Shaffer of Levittown, Pennsylvania passed away on Friday, August 11, 2017 at Saint Mary Medical Center, after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. He was 72 years old.He was the beloved husband of Gloria A. Hartley Shaffer, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, Don is survived by two children, Nicole M. Carey of Round Hill, VA and Darren L. Shaffer (Heather) of Burgettstown, PA and five grandchildren, Hanna, Conor, Dylan, Madalyn and Damon. He is also survived by his brother, Raymond Shaffer (Jeraldene) of Perkasie, PA, and sister, Terry Zuschnitt (Paul) of Bristol, PA. He is survived by many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law as well: Eileen Shaffer of Bellevue, OH, Sara Shaffer of Bristol, PA, Gayle and Michael Stephens of Levittown, PA, Barbara Weaver of Baltimore, OH, and Vincent Hartley of Prospect Park, PA. Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends are left to cherish the time that was spent with Don.Born in Kerrmoor, Pennsylvania, Don was the son of the late Carl and Harriet (Freyer) Shaffer. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Floyd C. Shaffer, Rudy W. Shaffer, Dale M. Shaffer and and his infant sister, Gale E. Shaffer.After spending his childhood in Ansonville, Pennsylvania, Don was a graduate of Beccaria-Coalport-Irvona (BCI) High School. He was a resident of Levittown for 55 years.Drafted into the Marines during the Vietnam War, he was extremely proud of being a Marine. Don was employed by Pathmark as a meat cutter for 44 years. During that time, in addition to attending to his job responsibilities, he helped many people by completing random acts of kindness, hoping that others would do the same.Don's passions in life were spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, and training dogs, especially beagles. There was no such thing as a bad day if he was hunting. He also enjoyed cooking, especially for family gatherings and game dinners. He was a member of American Legion Post 834, Fallsington, PA and a very active member of Garden State Beagle Club.Friends and relatives are invited to attend his viewing from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Tuesday, August 15th, 2017 at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown, PA. Additionally, friends and relatives are invited to a visitation at Chidboy Funeral Home, 300 State Street, Curwensville, PA on Thursday, August 17th, 2017 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. There will be a one hour viewing on Friday, August 18th, 2017 beginning at 9:00 am until the start of his funeral service at 10:00 am at Chidboy Funeral Home.
