Born to the late Salvatore “Spike” and Lena (DeAngeles) Petrillo, Ernie was also predeceased by his sister, Janice (Carl) Albano. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 wonderful years, Claire A. (Stevens) Petrillo; his children, Todd J. (Jennifer) of Levittown, Pa., and Allyssa (Gabriel) Cruz of Feasterville-Trevose, Pa.; and the grandchildren who brought him immeasurable joy—Isabella G. and Olivia M. Petrillo, and Lucas G. and Hudson M. Cruz, who lovingly knew him as “Papa.”
Ernie grew up surrounded by a large, close-knit family of first-generation Italian. He carried with him throughout his life the traditions, humor, work ethic, and deep love of family instilled in him from an early age. Proud of his heritage and equally proud of his country, Ernie served from 1963 to 1967 as a jet mechanic in the United States Air Force. He spent much of that time flying with the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, known as the Hurricane Hunters, an experience that shaped his adventurous spirit.
Following his military service, Ernie built a long and successful career in the publishing industry. Over the years, he worked with Interstate Distributors of Boston, Time Warner, Zebra, Penguin, and Pearson in New York serving as Vice President of Sales. His outgoing nature, determination, and ability to connect with people made him a natural in the world of book sales, where he collaborated with numerous celebrated authors and public figures. His career also allowed him to indulge his love of travel, both across the United States and around the world.
Ernie will be remembered for his extraordinary humor, generous heart, and the warmth he brought into every room. His compassion, quick wit, and larger than life personality left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Services will be held at a later date at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, Pa.
