Born March 16, 1931, in Elizabethtown, PA, Joe was the fourth of five children of Ida and Joseph B. Derr, Sr. Joe was preceded in death by siblings Harry, Margie, and Paul, and survived by sister Janet Harple of Maytown, PA.
Joe married the former Patricia C. White in February 1956. Together, they had three children, Pamela, Joseph, and Steven. Joe moved the family to Levittown where they resided in the Dogwood section until May of 2023, when Joe moved to the Brookdale assisted living community in Richboro. Joe and Pat were married for fifty-three years, with Pat preceding him in death in August 2009. Joe’s daughter Pam passed in August 2016. Joe is survived by his sons Joseph (Wendy) of Fairless Hills, PA and Steven (Melissa), of Ashburn, Virginia. Joe is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Joe retired from the federal government in 1988 and then worked for twenty-five years at Curtin and Heefner Law firm as a courier and general assistant. This was a perfect job for him as he was very social and loved the interaction with fellow employees and customer contacts. Joe and Pat were proud grandparents, and great grandparents, never missing an event or just spending time with family. Joe was proud that his great granddaughter Caitlyn and her husband were able to purchase his home in Dogwood.
Some of his favorite memories were hosting picnics and parties for family and friends; hunting and fishing with his son Joseph; and cooking for family events. Joe was a Korean War veteran, having served in the US Air Force, and was Post Commander of the American Legion Post 0329, Elizabethtown, in 1962.
There will be a celebration of Joe’s life in the coming months.
