Born in New York, NY, Donald was the sixth of eight children born to George and Ruth McCoy. Donald or Don, as he was lovingly known, attended New York public schools. He graduated in June 1958 from Haaren High School. Don enlisted in the Army in June 1960 where he was assigned as a General Draftsman. He served his country for four years and earned a commendation for Marksmanship. Don received an Honorable Discharge in August 1964 and became a Conductor for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
He attended The City University of New York, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in June 1976. He went on to work for Bell Atlantic NYNEX (Verizon), advancing from technician to management. He retired from Bell Atlantic in 1995.
Don’s reverence for the Lord was the cornerstone of his life. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Rev. David C. McCoy, he answered the call to preach the Gospel. He obtained his License to Preach in November 1997 under the leadership of Pastor C. Bracey at St. MatthewsUnited Methodist Church. A lover of the Word, Don received his Master of Divinity degree with honors from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1999.
Don was a very active community leader. He was a member of the Men of Purpose, a group of black corporate men whose mission was to mentor under-served black males in Trenton, NJ. Along with other Bucks County Jack and Jill fathers, he helped establish a father and sonbasketball team to encourage male bonding and exercise within the community. His greatest joy was sharing the Gospel of the Lord. He taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at St. Matthews Church. He also volunteered at several hospitals, providing Pastoral Care to the sick and shut in.
Don will be remembered as a God-fearing man, one who provided words of wisdom, a man who was surprisingly funny, a good listener and an avid reader, especially of the Bible.
Don leaves to cherish his memory his children, Don-Michael and Heather Millicent, his former wife of twenty-four years and dedicated caregiver Paula, his brother Bernard McCoy and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, George and Ruth McCoy, his daughter Bonnie McCoy-Williams and siblings Gladys, Sonny, Joan, Thomas, Shelia and Linda.
Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, March 13, 2022, from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm at Saint Matthews United Methodist Church, 4300 Somerton Road, Trevose, PA, where his funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm. Interment will be held in Washington Crossing National Cemetery at a later date.
