He was born in Auburn, January 1, 1934. The son of Alfred, Sr. and Loretta (Leclair) Mercier.
Al was a graduate of Edward Little High School. During his high school years, he won metals for swimming and diving three years in a row. After high school, he enlisted in the Army and was part of the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg, NC. As a Private First Class, he went to jump school in Ft. Benning GA. After his service in the Army, he enlisted in the National Guard, as a Sargent First Class. He began his career as a typesetter, working for the Lewiston Sun Journal for over 40 years. He then worked for United Wheelchair Ambulance service for 17 years, retiring in 2017 at age 83.
Al was a devout Catholic. He served as a Eucharistic minister, was a member of the Holy Family Paraclete prayer group, Ministry of our Lady of Fatima, and Cursillo. He served in Prison Ministry for 12 years, which brought him much fulfillment and joy. He loved hockey, and was a season ticket holder for the Lewiston Maniacs for several years. He enjoyed family time the most, and made us all his first priority. He brought much laughter and joy to everyone he met. From jumping off the roof into the pool, attending family plays, recitals and sporting events, he enjoyed them all. We are grateful for his love and kindness.
Al is survived by his wife Mary Jane Mercier, a daughter, Susan King (Kevin), step sons, Bob Seger, Jerry Seger (Linda), Bruce Seger (Wanda), Steve Seger (Sheryll), and Joe Fortin.
