he swam in the local pond, he'd suddenly dip under the surface like a loon. ‘My God, I think your dog just drowned!’ someone would yell. ‘Oh, he's just getting a rock,’ Violette would respond calmly, concealing his delight. Long moments later, Bear would resurface, nostrils sucking air to the point of hyperventilation and under and under he'd go again as if suctioned to the depths as if he were channelling a harbor seal. Eventually, near the shore, the top of his head would become visible, then the nose drawing precious oxygen, and soon Bear walking along the bottom of the pond would appear carrying a boulder in his mouth. The size of the thing was simply inexplicable, usually over ten pounds, proven when Violette took one to the Post office to be weighed. The instant Bear reached the shoreline, he'd attempt to herd the boulder toward dry land with his nose, growling with delight, tail a blur. Then he would pull a small tree sapping out of the ground, set it carefully on top of the bolder, and he was done for the day. 
“Bear also loved the fireplace at the library during the cold months. Violette would read in one of the worn armchairs, he was a huge reader with a near photographic memory, and Bear would get nearer and nearer the flames until on occasion he would actually smolder. I loved that dog, but he only loved Violette.” 
“Where is he?” “Oh, Bear died. Violette always got busted up pound dogs past their prime. He felt no one loved them.” “No, I mean Violette.” “Oh, he died too. I read his obit a few years back online. Man, I felt a shiver reading that. Like another 
era had ended. Now with the mill closed, the town is dead. Over sixty percent of the population is gone. I guess the north-country is dead because people don’t c

I probably shouldn't be saying what I'm going to here, but what the heck, it was the wonderful friendship that I had with David on Friday nights when I would go to The Gage on Ash Street in Lewiston for a Tequila Sunrise and a steak dinner, and always could count on/and enjoyed David's company and companionship! P.S. I'll be out of town on Saturday the 30th and not able to attend the funeral service; however, I'll be thinking of David as I know he would have loved the event that I'll be attending!  :>)

Rest In Peace, David. This brings back so many memories of good times on Allen Pond.

Sky Pilot, may you rest in eternal peace. I have your  fishing fly's you gave me for safe keeping. I will always treasure them because I know how much they meant to you. Till we meet again. RIP

Dave was a close friend of mine when we were youngsters.  He never ceased to amaze me with his knowledge of Maine wildlife, even as a very young fellow.  May his soul rest now, in peace, at last.
